76 550F 99% done (pics!)
« on: May 17, 2009, 06:03:32 AM »
I've been working on this bike for 2 years, enjoying this forum the entire time. I just finished redoing the topend for the second time (machining snafu) and there is finally no smoke! Having to take it apart again gave me the opportunity to polish some covers and customize the lights, so it wasn't all bad. I love it, but I'm selling it to finish my Norton (I'm asking a lot, so I'm sure I'll be able to enjoy it most of the summer)

I really like the way that the norton fork ears and signals clean up the front end on the 550F, I would like to put all the instrument lights in a Norton bucket and relocate the key under the tank, I think along with some chrome gauge covers it would really transform the front end (and do away with some plastic)

i like that it looks stock.

It even felt stock putting it together (I took one of the rubber donuts that was in the bottom of my crunched stock ears and put it inside of the gaiter then put the hoseclamp on to hold it up, it worked out really well, and stays up better than stock)

I think the fact that the bike was mangled when I got it was kind of a blessing, so I didn't feel bad about getting creative with it. I don't think I would have rearranged it if it was a barn-fresh survivor.

the threads on this forum were REALLY helpful for doing this work..
(for when I was too thick headed to understand the manual or the parts hard to find. They all made a measurable difference, IMO)

drilling clutch basket, installing new plates, adjusting clutch.
smoothing intake bores
double sprung points
tapered headset bearings
sealed wheel bearings
bronze swingarm bushings
rebuilding top end with oversize pistons/rings, (getting proper gaskets and o-rings and sealers)
cam chain and tensioner
primary chain, crankcase bearings, seals, dampers
fork seals, polishing fork tubes
stainless brake line
rebuilding caliper
rebuilding starter solenoid
rebuilding carbs (jetting for mac exhaust, float adjustment, adjusting air screws, synching, not getting pods, eliminating air leaks)
setting tappets
proper profile tires
changing shifter seal
de-rusting/painting/polishing chrome and aluminum

Nice bike btw.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

what kind of taillight/ turnsignal set up is that!?

I like the low profile look, but still looks somewhat stock.

or is that the 550 stock setup?

I got the turn signal on ebay, I think it is Emgo or similar quality, but it does have an aluminum body that can be polished and drilled easy. I bolted on Norton turn signal that I already had. I think yu can get Norton repeo lights cheap at Rgmmotors.com, I like them better than honda cause they have a simple threaded base.
