sorry subtlety is lost on me.

Do you think that seven posts back you clarified the original question?

I only see a statement that a small number is not zero.  Not an answer or a clarification to a stubborn old engineer.

Life does not give us clear-cut problems.  The trick to every problem is to recognize it and reduce it one we can solve.

Ahem. Mark, I don't think this is so much the Dead Parrot sketch as it is the Anne Elk (Miss.) sketch:

MarkCB744743,
You do realize that you will not be tested on this...?

I'm not grading, but if I were, I'd grade not on the answer, but on how the problem was treated.  And students that keep complaining about their grade and saying it is unfair are annoying.

And... if you have two real numbers, they are either equal, or one is greater than the other.

Or you could just use a larger hammer, which, oddly, is a solution for a lot of other problems....

You REALLY don't want to start the chicken and egg argument, do you? I mean, the answer is so goddamned painfully obvious, but people don't understand it 9 times out of 10. I mean, #$%*...

If the question is answered correctly, in this case, you'd only have time for about 2 pieces of popcorn.

Which came first?  A "how big of a tire can fit on my bike" thread, or an oil thread?

Seriously asking? Not an oil thread, not a tire thread. The answer is absolute and simple.
People somehow forget that the chicken and the egg are the same goddamned thing.
When we talk about an egg, we are merely talking about a chicken in it's embryonic state. The first chicken was just a chicken. When it was an egg, and when it was a chick, and when it was a chicken, and when it was dinner. That same #$%*ing chicken was all of those. You cant say either came first, because those two words are merely words for different stages of the same entity.

According to the theory of evolution, the first true chicken egg was laid by something that was not quite a chicken.

I've never met a thread so much in search of a controversy. Come on, guys, we can do better.

That's what I said. But you are still supporting the idea that the egg and the chicken are somehow separate entities.
What you should say is

Quote
According to the theory of evolution, the first true chicken was the offspring something that was not quite a chicken.

And then, in another book that explains what a chicken is, thered be some chapters about the various stages of life of said chicken. Embryonic, in an egg, would be part of that.

These two ussues have very little to do with each other.

I can't understand how this is lost on people.

You're right.   ;D

This is making the assumption that an embryonic egg can be considered a chicken.  I've always understood that the fetal chicken embryo does not actually become a "chicken" until it reaches the 3rd trimester.

Do a DNA test as an embryo, and as an adult chicken. It'll come up as the same chicken.

But that's all semantics anyway. If we are honestly calling the egg a separate entity from the chicken, then obviously the egg came first, because that egg became the first chicken upon hatching from the egg.
Fact remains, though, the egg and the chicken are the same goddamned thing.

Listen, when I order my breakfast, I want eggs sunny side up and runny. I'd pass if I got a chicken sunny side up and runny. That ain't no semantics; that's breakfast. ;-)

I could make you a chicken and egg breakfast burrito that would kick your ass. I know, not a very kosher meal, and it does seem a bit disrespectful to the animals involved, but hey...
