Things to remember after a rebuild
« on: May 21, 2009, 04:27:47 PM »
What are some things to look for and do the first few hundred miles after a rebuild?

Ive heard the piston rings wont set for a bit so ride it kind of hard at first.
Check torque on the rear axle and sprocket, stearing stem.
Check oil level.
read the plugs.

What else?

Tire pressure. If you fitted new tires and tubes.

They grow a bit. They also tend to be a bit greasy.

Chain tension...if you installed a new chain.

Spoke tension

Theres a heap of stuff that seems to crop up....

listen for strange sounds.....no high rpm's...NO synthetic oil at first..recheck valve clearance after awhile..oil change after 100 miles...no long idle....
Marti, I want you to know, I like you an awful lot, but guys have said far less and left wearing their drinks on their shirts.

Treat it as a "new" bike and do the servicing from new as in the Honda book
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

I've read, and will be doing this on my rebuild, that the el-cheapo single grade motor oil is good for break in. I'm trying parts store brand 10-40. Supposedly the rings will seat better from what I've read.

I would personally pick up a small thing of cam lube if you use low grade oil. I'd actually use it anyways.
