78 cb550 exhaust
« on: May 04, 2009, 06:42:33 AM »
Just bought a 78 550k, and it runs great but the 4into1 exhaust that's on their doesn't give the rear brake pedal the required clearance.  In other words, the brake pedal scrapes the Exhaust.  Am I right to assume that this is not the right type of exhaust for this bike?  Is their a way to fix this, and if there is not, are there any places that sell aftermarket 4into1 exhaust systems that will fit this bike?
  Thanks for all the help

I too have a 78 550K with a 4 into 1, no problems here either. Maybe if you post a picture.

I am actually taking mine off the bike to paint the headpipes, hope I don't snap off any head bolts.

Galensmitty, your avatar is yummy.

You most likely have a 4-1 off an F model bike.....

I like mine just fine!  The sound is a little tinny, but we don't have many options...........

If you going to upgrade to a mac, you want to sell your old headers? I have a 550K as well, but I'm not picky about taking a hammer to anything. ;)

Does the Mac header ever need any kind of maintenance?

Upgrade to a MAC? That just sounds wrong. I paint my MAC every season. Looks shiny and new.

+1

A MAC may be new, but from all I have read in the way of reviews it's a low end bottom of the barrel replacement exhaust system.
But anything is better than nothing I guess!

I have the same thing on my K bike. A little heat and some bending and it works fine...

If my options were to either modify a stock 4-1 or buy a mac, I would for sure keep the stock 4-1. Its much nicer looking and probably higher quality. I only got the MAC for lack of a better option.

I'll post a picture  this evening when I get home.
not sure if I can heat and bend the pipes.
Also I don't think the 4-1 set I have now is stock anyways.  Didn't they come stock with 4-4 setups?
  Thanks again

All 550s came with 4 into 4 except the F model supersports with their 4 into 1.  The four pipes near the brake pedal needed a unique offset for the brake arm, foot peg and kick starter.  Only the F model frame accommodates this without some steel modifications.

What must of happen is that The last owner got a hold of 550f 4 into 1 and put it on your 550k.
1 you can heat and bend the pipe

2 you can get or make a longer shaft to put your foot pedal on
