74 CB550 Project.... NEW UPDATED PICS!!

I drove a buddies 75 cb500 and I realized I had to have one!  I immediately began looking on craigslist and found quite a few. After looking at numerous piles of $#!t that people wanted over a grand for, I found one in my price range and that ran...sort of.

It was only a few miles from the house, and it stalled a few times on the way home. I felt very embarrassed driving it as it had a ugly windjammer fairing on it...kinda like a wannabe goldwing...along with some highway bars off who knows what that were attached with hose clamps and zip ties (I kid you not). The fairing was not made for this bike, as it has been modified and attached with a custom welded mount and (yes you guessed it) more hose clamps.

Anyway just before I pulled in the drive, the oil light came on, I started worrying that I just bought a bike that was about to die. after finding this site, I solved this problem and many more without even asking a question (since someone else has seen my problems). It turned out to be gunked up with crap.

I spent the first day grinding and cutting the fairing and bars off after trying to unscrew them. The guy who put it on tightened the bolts, then cut the extra threads off, so I could not unscrew 90% of them. WOW, bolt cutters are a gift from the gods!

Well enough of my b!tc#in about rednecks and their creative ingenuity, so here are some pics.







Once I start something I like to finish it. so when I started tearing things apart, I didn't want to stop. I took the carbs off cleaned them up real good, took the exhaust off and removed the rust and painted it, and removed quite a few other things to fix/clean. I worked through basically 4 days straight minus one or two hours to sleep. I am off school this week until tomorrow, when summer classes start, so I am trying as hard as I can to get it done soon. I don't have a job either our real unemployment rate is near 24%. There are no jobs around! So for now I'm living off savings and student loans.

I have no garage, I keep the bike in a shed and it has no electricity. As you can see from the pic, I used the light from a doorway to work through the night.

Below are some pics of the paint. I am trying to spend the least amount as possible, yet get it looking and running good. I plan to have it sprayed professionally next year, but until then rattle cans will do. a $4 can of primer, $3 can of yellow, $3 can of flat black, $4 can of yellow (plastic), $4 can of flat black (plastic), $4 can of high heat grill/stove paint (for headers), $2 roll of painters tape:

Total investment in paint: $24, not too bad in m opinion

I ripped off the honda emblum and had to bondo quite a bit but you cannot tell now!









I experimented with the tank, I don't want all 1 color

I didn't like how this turned out so I taped off a stripe of yellow and sprayed the rest flat black.

here's how it looks now




I'm not quite done with it yet, it still needs something yellow on the side, too much black.


Any Suggestions???

Honda logo, block lettering, something else???

The guy who owned it before me also tried to use the Kreem kit to seal the tank, but didn't wait till it was completely dry so it is peeling. I ordered the POR15 tank sealer, and ill get the Kreem out with paint stripper, then I'll pick up some phosphoric acid from Home Depot and I'll be all set for a fresh rust free tank.

I stopped working today because I have to wait for a couple new parts. Cylinder 2 and 3 were not firing, i ripped apart the points and found one bent up pretty badly. I tested the coils and condensers but all seemed to work fine. after about 3 hours of fiddling around with the $#!t, I come to find out one of the condensers works intermittently (only for about 10 minutes, then stops) that's why it tested fine but I still had problems. Well now the wait til the new parts come in,  let me know what you guys think.

This year I'm going with a stock look, except the paint. This winter Ill tear it down and have some real fun...cafe...bobber...who knows

Sounds like you've already ordered the points etc., and I'm not sure how much the parts cost, but you can go the electronic ignition route for about $120 I think from Z1 Enterprises.  Something to consider given the potential cost of new points/condensors or whatever it is you've ordered.

Nice quick start on the bike!  Still among my favorites of the bikes I've owned.

man i would say paint those side covers flat blact and then paint cb550 in yellow on the side of the tank paint the honda emblems yellow

I am back in class, but still have been working hard on the bike. I took the fenders off, shocks, headlight ring, wheels, and a few other parts and they surprisingly cleaned up very well! a $5 can of Never Dull does wonders ;D
I will post some new pics soon.

Got the new points and condensers yesterday  ;D ;D and it fixed most of the problems. It runs a lot stronger now!

There is a bit of hesitation when reaching higher than 5000 rpm's though. I believe it is from an exhaust leak. I was tightening the pipes on and one of the nuts seized and i broke half the stud off on cylinder 1. at least I have enough left to twist it out.

I have been reading a few posts on the subject, but don't know where to buy a new stud.
Has anyone encountered this problem before...where do you buy a new stud?  ???

Another issue is my petcock. well that didn't sound right...the petcock :P...it was clogged before so I removed it, cleaned it real nice and put it back on. It now feeds enough fuel, but leaks quite a bit. can I buy just a new seal for between the tank and the petcock? or can i use some rtv or epoxy?

by the way enjoying the site...first forum I have ever been involved with and love it!

Well done young man, at 22 you are doing a great job of putting that old garage queen back on the road.
I am always amazed at the young people of America and Canada and how they embrace these old bikes, here in New Zealand it's left up to older people who remember riding them in their youth, the young only want rice rockets made of plastic that turn out maximum speeds for minimum effort. :)
Check to make sure your advancer weights etc are flying freely, this can affect the top end performance of these bike considerably.
Again big ups for even attempting to tackle such a project...........Hush. :)
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I would try to find the new seal for the petcock, most sealers I have found (the hard way) dont like gas. Not one bit.

So I finally got it running like a champ.

Just pulled the carbs yet again (5th times a charm), re-adjusted the floats (2nd time), reset the valves (2nd time), reset the timing(10th time), and just got it back together. I also did the cam chain, rebuilt the front caliper, put on some new pads, and a few other various things.

I $ran some seafoam through the oil, and it stopped the oil light from coming on all the time too :D

Today, as I pulled out of the drive, it started down poring, but I got to go a couple miles. IT NO LONGER LOSES POWER AT HIGHER RPM"S. The floats were a little higher than I thought...about 24.5mm I believe that is what was causing it to run like crap.

Here are some pics, the bike is in need of a good polish and a 2 stage paint, but until winter this will do :D






One of my neighbors is making me some graphics for the tank and side panels. I'll post when I get them on and have some pics

So it's been a while....a long while!

I've been on this site quite a bit, but only lurking for answers and info. I finally got some new pics uploaded to the computer so i figured i would post some updates.

I have since my last post, done a lot to the bike. I just started a new job a couple weeks back, and with school i doubt i will have time this winter to tear it down...maybe next year :-\

Anyways, here are some pics!




These are a couple on a trip up north. One of the cheap 20 points broke- the rub block broke off- and had to leave her up there and get her the next weekend. I hitched a ride home on the back of my dads harley  :-[ As much as i liked riding with him when i was 10, it wasn't as much fun as i remember it!  ::)

anyway, got her home and fixed her up a few days later.

I painted the engine a few weeks ago. after finding a paint that holds up on the pipes, i decided to paint the motor too. Rustoleum Extra High Heat 2000 degrees worked for me.




I also purchased a 750 tank, don't know what year, petcock on right side, 2 fuel lines, locking cap, no door...I believe it's a 73 - 75. don't really know as it doesn't concern me. anyways i pounded the front of the tank a few times...right where the c clamps are, and now it fits my frame! i also had to trim down the pucks, cut em in half. I am in the process of getting it painted, and then will mount it. The 5 gallon capacity will be so much better than 3.6!

I also put new tires on- front: 110 90 19 battlax bt45; rear: 120 90 18 spitfire s11.

New DID chain and sprockets too.

I pulled the head and put in new rings. It was starting to smoke for a minute or two upon startup and weeping a bit from the head gasket, so i figured why not?

It runs like a dream now! I am hoping to get a 750 for next spring...if i find time for it.
