I understand part of what dookie was saying.  In Israel, for instance, Memorial Day is truly solemn.  Folks treat it with respect, almost reverence.  No one would every go on picnics, or shop the malls for all the sales going on. In fact, many businesses are closed.  No sales.  I think it is true that in much of America the point is missed, forgotten, ignored.  It saddens me.  I treat homeless and addicted vets in the ER every week.  They should be treated like royalty for what they have given, yet many of them are forgotten.  I remember my dad telling me how my grandfather charged him with a task when he left the US and got over to Europe at the end of WWII - find your brother in law's grave for us.  Decent society would not last without the commitments of those who defend it.

I thank you all who have served to the benefit of all of us who enjoy the privileges of civil society.  American vets especially, today; but all the vets from the armed forces who defend the freedoms and privileges of civil society around the world.
