For your next lesson in spelling
« on: May 20, 2009, 09:06:06 AM »
How do you pronounce this:  Le-a

SCHOOL TEACHERS, I BET YOU THOUGHT YOU HAD HEARD AND SEEN IT ALL!!
OKAY. How would you pronounce this child's name?     Le-a        (written just like that)

Leah?? NO

Lee - A?? NOPE

Lay - a?? NO

Lei?? Guess Again

It's pronounced 'Ledasha'. Oh yes...you read it right.

This child attends a school in Livingston Parish, LA. Her mother is irate because everyone is getting her name wrong. SO, if you see something come across your desk like this, please remember to pronounce it correctly.

When the mother was asked about the pronunciation of the name, she said, 'The dash it don't be silent.

Comedian Sinbad did a bit that he called " you know his/her Momma is black" with these kind of names.  Not too politically correct, but funny as hell.

But then there's one that probably won't come through that well in type.  You really have to hear the pronunciation of these actual names.  My wife is an administrator in an office that does social work here in Washington D.C..  One of the social workers told of a pair of twins she had met, that had some confusing names.  She came to the waiting room and called for(and she pronounced these as they are spelled) Lemonjello, and Orangejello.  The mother, in a huff, corrected the social worker.  (Let's see if I can do this justice).

 "That's le-MON-gello, an o-RAN-gello."

My friend's mom works with inner-city kids in the Kansas City area and had the same story - I'm not sure if it was firsthand or if she was passing on an urban legend.

Went to a meeting about 10 years back and there was a Danish sales rep for a piece of equipment we were about to purchase.
His surname was Kock
His first name was Bengdt (pronounced 'Bent')
He couldn't understand why the meeting was frequently interrupted by giggling fits.

Ima Hogg....."The first Lady of Texas".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ima_Hogg

Quote
Contrary to popular belief, Ima did not have a sister named Ura.[11] Texas legend insists that when Jim Hogg ran for re-election as Texas governor in 1892 he often travelled with Ima and a friend of hers and introduced them as his daughters Ima and Ura. Ima Hogg maintained throughout her life that this never happened.[12] She was frequently forced to dispel the myth; hundreds of people wrote her letters inquiring whether her name was real and if she really had a sister named Ura.[10] The Kansas City Star even invented another sister, Hoosa

My folks always though it strange that I would laugh whenever Dick Butkus was mentioned on TV. kinda ruined the NFL for me for years.
