Stupid question regarding needle and seat
« on: May 20, 2009, 06:12:52 AM »
Hi guys... this might be a stupid question

i have a '74 750k, and the carbs have been leaking quite a bit.I took them off and checked the bowls for muck, but they were clean.I took the floats off and the  needles?
(might be the wrong terminology, the bit that has a cone at the end, with the other end having a tiny Sprung plunger)
and it was very clean.

Next i put it back together(minus)bowls, and turned it upside down(to check that all floats would shut off at approximately the same time.) and blew down the fuel intake hose. Two on the right refuse to release air.
Even without the "needle and seat".

What gives???, and my apologies for not being clearer but I'm not entirely sure my terminology is correct. :)

Could they be blocked? the bike ran well, except for the occasional leaking.

Ps, just googled images of needle and seat and it looks like i got it right.

Am i doing something way wrong?

Also, i think the leaking mighta been cos the rubber gaskets on the bowls is very worn.

Thanks
Thunder

Leaking from where would help?  From the overflow tubes or bowl gasket?  Take some carb cleaner with the long hose and spray in the needle seat into the carb and see if it comes out somewhere.  Maybe something is stuck in there?  Did you rebuild these and clean them out?  As long as you have them apart might be a good idea.  Oh, just because the needle and seat are clean does not mean they work.  Any small scratch or wear mark will cause them to leak.  While you have the carbs off check the float level just to be sure.  Be sure the floats are installed right side up too.  Good luck with it.

It was leaking from the bowl gasket.  :)

What I'm asking is when one blows through the gas pipe into the carbs(with the bowls off ), there should be an out rush of air past the needle and seats?, all 4 of em?, because i am only getting air coming outta 2.

Plug the holes the air is coming from and see if it comes out the other 2.
