Fantastic Weather for Riding in the Mid-west
« on: November 03, 2005, 10:06:06 AM »
Hard to believe it's November. Thermometer says 67 F right now, but seems much warmer. Great weather, great ride. Normally, on weekdays I pretty much have the roads to myself. Today, however, thick with bikers. I have a feeling a few calls were made to the boss this morning, "cough, cough, not feeling too good today, will be in tomorrow."  ;)

Now I have to go do battle with the leaves though.  >:(

I be across that state from ya, and from my office window sure does look nice. Motivation has dropped to almost null. Trying to kill 30 more mins and I am out of here and going to get some seat time myself.

Its nice huh?  Pretty windy here in Illinois today though.  25mph sustained with 35+ gusts.  I sure as hell rode though and Im not complaining...better than(should I say it?) snow.  Stupid work.

Egil,

How much snow do you get? Do you ride year round or are the months when it is too cold?

They get quite a bit of snow if I am correct. Cold too! I can ride in the afternoon but  I do not have riding gear for the cold so 45 is the lowest I go right now!!!!  DAMN DAMN DAMN!!!

Went out a week or so ago when it was 42, had a couple of extra layers, not to bad, but gauntlet gloves were the biggest help, kept the wind from tunneling up the sleeves..brrrr.

Many riders use enduro biks ride the hole year, then white studs cross tyres it is possible on ice roads, :)

First snow of the season on Nov 1.  Looks like bike riding is over in the Kootenays for the season.  Temp is about 1 C and about 150mm of snow at lower elevations, more up in the Rockies.

Hell yeah ditchen!  Dear god those things are an absolute blast!  Ive got my second real snow mobile trip slated for late Jan.  Last year we started in Minocqua Wisconsin and did 600 miles up to Copper Harbor Michigan and back.  Dont own my own sled...cuz I live in Illinois and we dont get nearly the snow we used to, but we rented some #$%*in 4-stroke Yamaha Rage 1000s, theyre triples, and they were phenomenal machines.  Not quite the pick up of the 2-strokes but still insanely fast!  You hit the throttle and youre doing 80mph NOW!  Plus you dont have to breath in all that two stroke smoke since the exhaust exited the rear instead of right in front of you.  Didnt realize how finely tuned, and sturdy machines sleds where till last year and they rekindled my love for snow that I lost after childhood.  As much as I love riding.....Man, Ive never been on or in a machine more satifying.  I wanna try an F16 next! 8) ;D

Another great day today, even warmer, 71 F!! Wind was something of a challenge though to say the least. The weekend looks like rain, but next week, according to the forecast, should have some nice riding days as well. Makes you wonder when the hammer is going to fall.

Yes sir, very nice day. Left work early and just got back from putting on some 2 track miles through the country side on me dual-sport. Wind was not to back back in the woods. As ar as the hammer dropping, well you sure cannot believe the weather man. Just getting all the saddle time I can and enjoying the indian summer. Love the colors this time of year.

I got a few miles in today, but the daylight savings is making it dark awfully early. I've been working in AA this week and took a lunchtime cruise down Huron River Drive, very nice through the tree tunnels. Best color I've seen is right here in Hines Drive. The tree tunnel near Northville is short but outstanding - total yellow. These are truly bonus riding days here in Michigan.

I may have seen the Loco bike tooling up the hill with passenger on Catherine street but I haven't yet spotted your gold 750, Bob.

I'm a fair weather, daytime rider. It seems a shame to put these cycles into a forced hibernation, but it makes the last rides so much sweeter.

You guys in Michigan definitly have some beautiful roads to eat up.  Ive vacationed up there many times and have relatives there.  I have yet to take a bike there, but I think of how great the ride would be everytime.  Truely magnificent scenery and I have yet to see it in its autumn glory.  Central Illinois sucks.

It is truely worth the trip. Got a lot of miles looged on the bikes and snowmobiles through out this state.

BTW, it is looking like the hammer is going to fall, headed out in a few mins on another ride before the rain sets in.

Hey MetalHead, I'm sure you have some nice roads there somewhere, and I think it's hard to see the beauty of a place if it's in your face all of the time. I try to get away from any commercial developement and truck traffic. Have you ever seen this? http://www.motorcycleroads.us/il.html .The Michigan listings have led me to a couple of new rides.I also found this book and it's on my Christmas list http://www.arbutuspress.com/cgi-bin/store/commerce.cgi?cart_id=1123123407.25708&product=Books&pid=27

I think September, October, and so far November, are the best here.

"Leaf Season" finally hit here in the mountains. Screw the Blue Ridge Parkway- I went 63 to 209 up to Hot Springs and back down 251 along the river.  My 400 is waiting for work and a new tank, but I took my other Honda. Very nice rhythm you get into on these kinds of curves.  I actually thought of you guys and thought maybe I should take some pictures- but I would have had to stop.  Use your imaginations or buy a postcard!  YEEEEE- HAAWWW
I'm getting home-made cornbeef hash with 2 over easy with some guys tomorrow morning at Poppy's Kitchen (They have hand lettered signs all ove the place. My favorite; "Please don't lick your plate. We'll  give you more!") and doing it again Sunday. Hey- I've waited this long on a new water heater. It's not going anywhere...

Now that's a good question!  They put so much on the plate I don't think anybody ever sees the bottom except the guy who washes dishes.  Well, come to think of it, I've never actually seen anyone washing dishes...
