Transmission Low Gear Free Play
« on: May 19, 2009, 09:23:18 AM »
got a 75 CB400F and am rebuilding the engine.

I noticed about 1/16" of free play side to side in the low gear (#4 in schematic) on the counter shaft (the shaft the sprocket attaches to).  This does have a pressed in bushing.  I'm wondering if this is normal or if the bushing has worn past it's service limit.  The bike only has around 12K on it.

I noticed on the bushing, it has the little indents for oil, so I wonder if it's supposed to have some play in order to let oil in between the bushing and shaft, as the low gear spins free of the shaft?

The gear is in great shape and would like to find the bushing if it's worn down, but have no clue where i would find a new bushing.

Any guidance would be great!  Thanks

I have come across this on a few rebuilds. I remove the bushing and machine a new one out of bronze with some oil grooves in.
If you can't do this, I would suggest taking it to a machine shop with the shaft and ask them to make you a nice new one with a tighter, but still free fit.

I copy that, made some and have 2 lying around here to do. I remove the bushings, make new ones out of bronze with 0.03 - 0.04 mm play. And they are like new.

Good luck
Better sorry for failing then for the lack of trying.

What would a machine shop charge for something like that?  Ball park figure?

Also is this normal?  The manual says the "free gears should have no dicernable play"

So i'm assuming that mine is worn past it's limits.

Thanks for the replies!

You have more play than is desired so best get a new one machined up.
Can't help on what a machine shop would charge as I am on the other side of the world and what I would charge will have no bearing to what you might be charged in the US. But it is not a big job.

Appreciate the feedback!  I'll def look into it.  I'd hate to rebuild the entire engine and skimp on a bushing like that.
