Question 72 CB350 Twin Engine
« on: May 21, 2009, 06:46:42 PM »
I'm tearing down a 350 twin engine to rebuild and I need to know how to get the cam chain off. Do I cut it and replace it or can you remove the cam chain without breaking the it. Thanks.

It can come out in 1 piece.

There's a manual here if you don't have one.... http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=17788.0

Good luck.

It's pretty easy, if I remember correctly. Just unbolt the cam gear from the cam. Then work the cam out of the head. You'll have to turn it this way and that to fit through the mind-tease puzzle holes.
No.

Sorry, but I think you have to take off the crank first. I've only gone as far as removing the head and cylinders, though.

Yup, on most (all?) of these CB's, you cannot remove the cam chain without splitting the crankcase.

No.

I gues sit depends on the size of the job - if you're just replacing the chain or taking the barrels off you can do that by splitting the chain and using the chain to pull a wire around the crank. Do your work, leaving the wire in place then use the wire to pull back through a new camchain when doing it all back up. You don't ven need the wire if you have the barrels off, I've replaced many a 350 chain using fingers and one of those little pen magnet things to pull the chain around the crank without splitting the cases.

The wire method is by far the easiest though if you don't want to split the cases...

If you're just taking the cam off, you can loosen the cam sprocket bolts and slide the cam out through the cam case.

I should have added, "... or cutting the cam chain, which requires a master-link for reinstallation.  Stock chain is endless without a master link."
