Need advice on project bike...UPDATE! Pics!
« on: November 03, 2005, 07:48:26 PM »
Ok, so I am looking at getting another project for this winter, and since I have no money right now my options are limited.  Well I had a guy offer me a 60's Honda 161cc bike, for free!  Sounds good, but he says it is missing some parts, how much, waiting to hear back.  So my question is, should I consider this, I mean it is free, so if nothing else I am not out anything.  Also, should I go with this one, is there anything I should know up front?

UPDATE:
Ok, here are the pics

If it's a CB160, it's a good candidate for vintage racing. I saw them racing this summer and it looks like a blast!
If you don't want to race you could probably find someone to take it off your hands so they could race it.

The only way any of these bikes could be considered "free" is if the machine were handed over at no cost and the previous owner handed you a cashier's check for about $2,000 at the same time.  ;D Great fun to work on though.

Well look at it this way. If it is missing to many parts, you can always clean all the parts and sell them on e-bay to get money for another project bike.

wasn't the early cb's the stamped frames and not the tubular frames.

Onme of the chapters of the VJMC just auctioned one of those off. Great bikes, but there's no such thing as a "free" bike.

They were great little bikes, sort of a baby CB77 and some had crankshaft issues. But they are definitely worth preserving for sure. There were a ton around where I grew up in the mid-late 60s. Those guys, like us moved on to DOHC450s and the 750s when they arrived.

I knwo what you mean by saying there is no such thing as a free bike, BUT, if I pick it up and it is just not worth doing anything to I can always part it out.  Basically, is there any reason I should not just take it as it is?

I've wanted one of those for a long time. I think they're a great bike. Several folks around here keep getting into smaller bikes- you can't beat 'em for pure fun, but it helps to be old enough that you don't have to be macho anymore  8) ;)

Hey you guys,.....stop assuming,......nobody said it was a CB.

Two 161 models got sent to the USA,...CA160 in a pressed steel frame, the other, the CB160 in a tubular frame.

Although the CB may be more desirable (same set up as the racing CR93) don't knock the pressed steel, remember the CB92 ?  ::)

Ok, so I picked up the bike today.  Will post pictures soon.  It is the scrambler style (gotta love it!) but in the mean time it is missing some parts but here is the info I have:
VIN: B160 1074673
EVIN: B160E 1074459

Missing (at least what I have noticed)
-Carbs
-Seat
-points cover
-heat shield
-and more that I am sure I missed

Condition of parts that are there:
-Tank - good shape, no dings, little surface rust
-Spedometer - very good shape, surprisingly
-Exhaust - missing heat shield, surface rust on lower pipe
-Engine - could not turn it over by hand, but it is my understanding it if does not go easily to get some mystery oil into it first, responses?

What other stuff should I take into consideration?  I will take some pics so you guys can tell me what you think.

Thanks
Joe

Yeah, the more I am looking at how much it needs, the more I am thinking part it out for money for a slightly better resto project...

I do like the scrambler part of it, but there are others

I say go for it. I'm getting a similar freebie (albeit a Yamaha), same style and roughly same displacement. They guy's had it in his basement since 1967! Supposedly the only thing wrong is that the bolt that holds the kicker on is stripped. We'll see....

Onme of the chapters of the VJMC just auctioned one of those off. Great bikes, but there's no such thing as a "free" bike.

It was the Michigan chapter of the VJMC. The drawing was 2 weeks ago for a fully restored 1967 CL170 Scrambler, vintage MI plate included! I guess I can throw my ticket stubs away as they haven't called to tell me I won yet... >:( :'(

I know.. I just brought it up because of the old saying, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!". I've only heard about the bike, I have yet to see it in person. I'm supposedly going to get to see it tomorrow. For all I know it could be the same deal.

well good luck with it.  Hopefully it won't be so bad.  At least there should be some parts on the 160 worth salvaging and selling, maybe then I can get a decent winter project...

On a brighter note, there may be one ready for me, all I know is it is a Honda!  Not sure if he wants to get rid of it yet, but should be hearing back soon.  Man are the things ever an addiction!

Ok, so I have decided against the CL160 as a project bike because...I picked up a 72 CB500 yesterday!!  ANotehr freebie, but it is almost complete, only missing right side cover and left mirror.  It is in pretty decent shape, few very small dings in the tank, NO RUST in the tank!!  Guy last used it 5 years ago and has been sitting since, came with a title and all!

Sweet!! The ones the guys all had around here in the mid/late 60s were all CBs - with the street pipes. The scramblers were much rarer. Be patient and spend lots of time lurking on eGouge. That little lady is definitely worth restoring. Congrats. While they had their Cb160s, I had one of the 150 Dreams. Then I finally got a CB77. That was a road terror to me then. The fellow that has it now (11 owners later) has restored it, and it seems like a tinker toy. Not to belittle it in the least, but I remember the day I got it, it seemed huge. There were no 450s around and we had no use for the BSAs and Triumphs. Nortons were pretty rare too But that Super Hawk seemed massive the first time aboard. ;D
