Think i can patch this carb up....
« on: May 21, 2009, 08:15:55 PM »
I was pulling my carbs out of the cleaner and scrubbing them down ready for a second dip and i noticed this on the main jet area....i am thinking i may be able to use something like jb weld to seal it up once the emulsion tube (??) section is screwed in, then i can still change jets, most likely won't be able to pull it back out, but i will deal with that when necessary.....i would either install it with jb weld on the threads acting like sealer or cover the crack from the outside, or both....any suggestions

the part of the crack (or rot?) you can see through is the only place it goes all the way through although its real close on the rest of the crack obviously

JB weld isn't made to sit in gasoline. That is very corroded.....I would think about a diiferent set of carbs. I have some in much better condition then that if you are interested.

Why don't you try some thread sealer that's OK for gasoline. I'll bet loctite has something. Worth a try eh?

i was thinking about that before the jb but i can't recall any that is....we use this real thick pipe dope for head studs and thought that might work, but i don't think it'll hold up to gas....i'll have to do some research (or come up on a sweet deal on carbs  ;))

Wow,

I have to go with MRieck on this one......... what I see of the carb looks pretty bad.

Contact MRieck or do you have a motorcycle salvage yard near you?  By the way, what bike model and year?

I would probably go with fresher carbs also but if you want to try a fix look for a product called "SEAL-ALL". Fixed a cracked main jet tube with it years ago on one of my bikes and is still there. It seems to love living in gas. Good luck

i may clean these up and attempt a repair and have a spare set....but MRieck is coming through big time thankfully so this won't come back to haunt me somehow...
