Air filter: Foam vs paper? (no pods here!)
« on: June 04, 2009, 02:51:22 PM »
I opened up the airbox on my 77 750k to find a badly disintegrating foam filter for the previous owner, and I am trying to decide if I am going to replace it with a stock paper filter or get another foam one. (K&N is way too pricey for my blood, so that's out of the question).
The PO was most likely not very smart about this bike judging by the things I have already fixed/replaced, so I am not sure if the foam filter was correct for the exhaust setup. He replaced the stock pipes and mufflers with 2 2into1 drag pipes with turnouts and no mufflers and obviously no baffles. I'm not sure if he used the foam filter because of this exhaust setup or if he replaced the stock one because he thought it was cool or something.

Does anyone have any recommendations about paper vs foam for an exhaust setup like I described? I just want it to run well!

ps- I hate the pipes on it and wish I could afford to replace it with the stock set up... someday, baby. Someday...

I was talking to a shop guy today about this. My bike seems to be running on the rich side and I had read foam filters tended to lean them out a little. He didn't feel this was the case, and said they flowed pretty much the same amount of air in a non-pod type foam filter compared to a paper filter.

Guess I'll go with paper if they are basically equal... less expensive and more stock! Thanks!
