fork dust seals -- fitment?
« on: May 21, 2009, 03:28:16 PM »
I'm rebuilding the front fork on my '75 CB750K.  I'd like the install the later, dust seal cap-type dust boots, instead of the accordian-style gaiters.

I know this is probably common knowledge (just not common for me  :-[ ).

Can someone give me a model or part number or cross reference for fitment?  I've searched and found comments like "use dust seals from a 500 twin."  Can anyone elaborate (years, etc)?

I know my fork tubes are 35mm, but I want to make sure the boots fit over the bottom fork case and seat in the groove, too.

I've been eyeing these at MikesXS:
Fork seal Dust Covers (Pk/2) - Fits: 1977-84 XS650D-K (35mm. fork tubes).

http://www.mikesxs.net/products-19.html#products

Will they work?

I emailed Partsnmore, but they will "neither confirm nor deny" that these will fit:
Fork Dust Boot - High Quality
Fits: Honda CB750K (77-78), CB750F1 (1976), CB750A (76-78)
OEM # 51425-375-003/005

I dunno if those will fit...no experience with them.

I think the critical factor will be the groove diameter and outside Diameter of the lower fork leg.

The fork TUBES are 35 MM ...doesn't mean the lowers are.

Additionally the distance of the grooze from the top of the lower will play a factor in if they fit.

Hmm just done mine but the 1979 CB650 ones fit "inside" the fork bottoms so diff fitment altogether, you might have to pop down to a wreckers and have a poke around at some old bikes to check.
Other option is buy and be damned....if they are wrong put them back on Ebay and get your money back. :D

I got new fork seals ready and waiting to go it -- just arrived today, actually.

Now I just need to figure out this boot / dust deal situation, so I can fully reassemble the forks.

All the 500 twin are the same and that part number with the 375 middle is the 500 twin part

THANK YOU !!

So, just to verify for everyone's general knowledge (including my own), part number 9, below, is the one we're talking about -- in the boxes.

Bike Bandit lists these for a '75 CB500T at $19.64 (I assume this is each, not for the pair -- can anyone correct me?)

I'm making a good faith attempt to document as much as possible on my build, hoping it can benefit others as much as the information I've found so far has benefited me.  Call me a geek, but I'm also putting together a spreadsheet with vendors, parts (including part #'s) and prices, to help get a good comparison.  I'll be sharing that with everyone once I get it filled-in a little better, hoping folks can add to it as they see fit -- open source, baby!

Even though all the tubes are 35mm, my fitment problem was that I had the earlier lowers with a smaller diameter lower leg than the K5. I think the later honda dustcovers, like the later Ks and Fs, should work on the K5.

But confirm elsewhere, pls.

I'm pretty cold on the topic, as i got what i wanted. But if memory serves, they had the boots, but not the chrome covers in my size.

The diameter of the fork lower has been my concern all along.  It seems like all vendors say "fits 35mm fork tubes", but none list the other crucial dimension -- the outside diameter of the fork lower.

The ones from David Silver look good, but I'd want to be sure they fit before springing for international shipping.

As mentioned, I was the odd man out with the smaller earlier lower legs. What I ended up with, was Honda XL250 and Harley something or other, from 754s help. They appear identical.

The CB750 lower leg upsized around K3+, I'm pretty sure and at that point lots of things would fit it like the CB500T, and the later Ks and Fs. That's just some background, you'll still need to confirm to your satisfaction.
