preventing chrome bars slipping
« on: April 11, 2011, 11:59:11 AM »
So, these new euro bars i've installed are not ribbed or scored where they are clamped.
They are tight now, and dont seem to want to move, but under braking....umm, i want to stay on.  :o
I taped off and lightly sanded the bright finish off with 400.  do i need to do more, like take a file and make some diagonals to make this more secure?  what have you done?
thx guys.

FWIW, I have put after market bars on almost every bike I've owned and have never done anything to them to prevent slipping, and I've never had any problems with them staying put.  I might be worried if I were putting on some ape-hangers, due to the leverage, but with the low-rise bars I use I don't see there being any issue.

for peace of mind you could use a centre punch and make some dimples in the clamping area, dont pound too hard.

From my BMX days, I remember shaving a little off the bottom of the top clamp(s) if bars started slipping...  It allowed me to clamp them tighter.

Just make sure the clamps are the correct way round and tightened in the right way.

ive had euro bars on my cb500 for over a year with no problems. as long as your bar clamps still have some ribbs to them and tighten down on the bars then your fine.

I had trouble with re-chromed bars slipping once. I took some aluminum or steel screen from a screen door, cut it, and wrapped it around the bars, then re-tightened, It worked.

oh, F&R wheel bearing, that's a hell of a job too! (hint) HEAT! Actually, I don't know about your bike, but 3 things, the bearing retainers may be staked in, you have to drill out the punches. 2) if you bike has a  tube through the middle of the hub that makes it hard to get a punch on the edge of the bearing to drive it out, they can be forced to side a bit, and bent back upon re-install, and 3) heat!! good luck!

Don't need the ridges on your bars. Your forks don't have them in order for your triple tree to clamp on good and tight - so neither does your top handlebar clamp if torqued down good.

You can always give them a good yank. If they don't move I think you're safe.

Nice looking bike BTW flybox I think white is the shzznit!

you could do like robert pirsig in zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance and cut out a sheet from an old beer can, wrap it around your handlebars nice and tight, and then clamp em down . . . works good.
