A small problem recently with Web cams....
« on: May 22, 2009, 06:01:49 PM »
I have built several 750 engines over the past 6 months and run into a problem with the "new" billet Web cams I've installed. They overall length appears to be a bit short which causes the thrust washer on the left end to bind. I've had to lap them etc to get the cam to spin freely. I know it's not a big deal but if you are new to the game of engine building it will screw you up. For me it takes an extra 45/60 minutes of fitting, lapping, sanding, cleaning.....just general BS. I'm only talking about .015 or so but I've never had a problem with the old billet Megacycle cams. I know I'm #$%*ing but like I said it would cause confusion for a new guy.

You buy a part, you expect it to fit, unless it specifically says it needs fitting. I'd email them if you haven't and let them know. Doubt it will accomplish much, but it never hurts to try.

Sure it's for sale! How much you ask?? Well, how much are you willing to pay??? Now triple it, that's the price!

.015 is huge in an engine....have you contacted them, maybe there is some kinda reason they did that, otherwise that makes me start to think "they can't get the length right, how are they gonna get the profile exactly how i want it and/or is designed" have you mic'd the lobes just to check at least that much, never mind the seperation....do you guys degree these cams in any way...

60 minutes is a long time, if you are doing it for yourself its no big deal....but if i got the cam for a customer and it took an extra hour, thats about 80 bucks that i couldn't (and morally wouldn't ) pass along to the customer

I have never seen a Web cam match the lift and duration specs exactly. After saying that I'd have to say the same about Megacycle. Megacycle has been closer in general. I know guys on this forum have seen Web lift numbers shy by .010 or so. Web doesn't even supply a timing card with CB750 cams. ::)
