Frame is back from being blasted. Time to clean up welds.  I might try to smooth some of them out with bronze. Just an idea.

So now I need to assemble the top end to check for valve clearance issues. I also picked up a NOS cam chain slipper tensioner. Mine was cracked. They are not cheap.



Where did you find one of those?

I think Honda still has that part in stock. You can't get the rest of it but just the rubber is still available.

According to BikeBandit, the tensioner slipper is $66.59. That's not too bad considering its importance. The guide (the one that goes on the inside of the chain) is still available for $33.96.

NOS stator cover. My buddy dropped my cb550 and broke the cover. I slapped on a junky one i had lying around and sold the bike. He bought me a NOS one to replace the one he destroyed. Looks good on my polished cover.

I have been busy studying for a promotional exam at work for the last few months so the bike has been sitting. I also was distracted by my XR600. Im back at it now. Frame was cleaned up and sent out to powder coat. Then it will head over to the paint shop for color. I was going to PC the swingarm but i dont want to cut the old bushings out since they were good. Paint guy will just have to paint it without the PC on it. No pictures yet just an update. Here is the XR project im working on.

And here is the CB im flipping to pay for more parts and tools.

I have been putting the motor back together in anticipation of the frame being painted.
This is what i did today.
Used a little bit of gasket maker to help seal the little pucks.



Then I put the cover on and sorted out all the stainless bolts. Looks nice right?


Except that i forgot that I need to use my cover that is cut open to dial in the cam!!!! Oh well. Ill take it back apart in a few days when i get home from work, dial in the cam, and then button the top back up. Then its on to the clutch and cover, oil pump, stator and cover, and....what ever else im forgetting. Oh oil pickup and pan.

On another note i finished a fork swap on XR600.

Bikes a 97. Made them till 2000 and now they make a 650L that is air cooled and e start but is heavier and slower.

Wow, I'm really off my game.

Those huge shrouds at the front of the XR650L fooled me - I knew that the XR650R was l/c, those big shrouds on the L made me think it also had a rad in there.

Here is the normal cover.


Here is mine cut open. I  think i used a sawzall and then mill the edges down. Im sure an angle grinder would work too.





Then i cut out a sheet to fit where the top cover usually sits.


Add your magnetic base and your ready to go.


I guess i should do a "how to degree your cam" in my motor build since i had no clue when i started.

Well i got the cam degreed now ill swap the rockers back over to the actual cover and button it up. Final degree was 14* and 46* on intake and exhaust.

Got the clutch put together today and the points cover painted. Still need to do the oil pump and a few other things but its all coming together now.

If you hadn't done it, looking at the dull fasteners would upset you and you wouldn't be happy thinking about the $163 you saved.

Thats why i did it. I have spent so much money on this build whats another 163. Plus whats the point of building a bad ass shiny bike if your going to use rusty bolts.

Definitely bad ass and f0cking purty as well.  Great thread for someone like me doing an engine/bike build for first time,truly inspirational.  I completely understand the principal at work here where by small things that seem like no big deal in the beginning become glaring as time goes on.  I've had to give up hope and let these things stand, hopefully when everything is back together they won't be glaring.The whole being more than the sum of it's parts? You've gone the extra mile and will be well satisfied for your efforts I think.

Thanks ffJMoore I've read through that thread as well, been following your build for along time just never posted.   Threads like yours, paulages, SohRon and others I'm forgetting are of immeasurable help.  I suppose you are also to blame for getting me this deep into a bike build with valve jobs, overbores,cams, $$$, etc... ;D Seriously though without your detailed posts I would never have endeavoured to do such a build.  When I get this bike running you will have a share in that success.
