Got my ported head back from having a valve job. They sand blasted the whole thing. Do i have to resurface the head now or is it good with the blasted finish?

Tank is paid for and in the mail. :D :D :D

Why did they blast the head? I hope they didn't blast the cam bearing journals....

Think i have the head sorted out now. I machined down the right brake mount for the dual disk set up. I think it will work now. Also got my tank from England! SOoooooooo nice. Im at work for 2 days so i cant fit it on the bike yet but after i do its on to building a seat and mounting the fairing. My plan is to keep building and putting things together until its all there and im satisfied. Then I will tear it all apart and powder coat the frame and paint the tank. This is going to be a slow build.

Nice tank. Good news with the head as well. I wasn't going to do a mock up, i was going to wait till i got all my parts together first but, it is taking so long to do it that way i might think hard about starting a mock up soon, its killing me to collect all these beautiful parts and not be doing anything with them...

For me, im doing the mock up first because im going to build a custom seat and re wire the whole bike from scratch. When i do all this i will have to add my own tabs and brackets to mount things so i want to sort it all out and see how it works before paint. Same with the air box. I want to build a custom air box and want to see how the bike performs with it compared to the pods. So i plan on doing all kinds of frame mods before i paint, like my rearsets. I would also like to run the bike on a dyno before i put on the ported head 650 cam and possible gentlemans pistons. I know somebody around has one because they bring it out to the bike nights.

I am doing exactly the same thing, gsxr 43 right side up forks, alloy swing arm, 1000cc billet block engine with all the goodies , fuel injection incorporating the stock airbox and a fully braced frame. I have all the major parts already but i have some special bits like the manual primary chain adjuster still being developed, so i have no choice but to wait....But i have another engine i could drop in for a mock up i suppose......I just like sitting there after  doing some work and pondering all the things to do next, thats one of my favourite parts of building bikes.... ;)

Fit the tank on the bike. Richard at TABll di a great job. I wish the tank sat a little lower but that is just not possible with the 550 frame. I think once i put on a 18" rear tire it will lift the back a little and level it out some. Startin to figure out how im going to mount the fairing and the parts i need for the dual disk.

Took advantage of a buddies shop. Have one set of rearsets tacked on and the other is jigged and almost done. I also built a motorcycle stand.

The stand

Rearset jigged but i ran out of 7/8 tube

Grinding down the welds on the rearsets is top on the list. Then Im going to work on mounting the fairing. making custom brackets is a PIA. Also have to weld in a bar to mount the rear of the tank to.
Im having commitment issues with the rear hoop that i built. Ill post pictures and get opinions. Im really liking that rear brake cable setup you have. I wonder if ill be able to adapt it to my bike.

Sounds like there's still some fab work ahead for you. ;)

Shouldn't be a major issue going with a cable.  The only real problem is making a mount for the cable at the pedal end.  I'll probably bolt a bracket to my battery tray brace.  Could also attach a bracket using the 2 bolts the hold the clutch cable mount.

I made a rear hoop for my bike. Im not sold on it because its not one round turn. I only had access to a 3" raidus and i really need a 4" radius. Im going to try and track down sombody with the right equipment in town.

Built the brackets for the faring and mounted the tac. Still need to finish the bracket for the headlight. The rear hoop looks to flat. I think it needs a bend up in it.

Im not digin my rear sets. i think im going to use the pegs but build my own pedals. Need to go find some tube with the right inside diameter. I think ill build them so i can use a cable for the linkage to the rear brake.

Are the pegs too high?  You have them above the frame's bottom and  I find a lower position is more comfortable as you don't have to fold up so much.

A suggestion before you fab up another set...
So, throw the seat cushion or some foam to give the correct height and use a floor jack with a pipe or wood rod of appropriate diameter clamped to the cup to set the height and position you want them in.
Do it wearing your usual ATGATT attire and hold the position for 5 minutes to see if it works.
Use your existing rear set for one side and the jack supported rod for the other side.

You don't want the rear sets to crunch you up and make the bike uncomfortable or it will add fatigue to the riding position and the bike won't be fun to ride longer distances.

My $0.05 worth...

David

P.S. You may want to consider having a depression in the center of the seat foam (using dense foam that has the center relief) to relieve pressure on your groin like most bicycle seats. Your cafe bike will have you sitting rotated forward more than on your "sit  bones"

I mocked up some different positions before i commited. This is the most comfortable spot. Its still not a comfortable position but thats because you are leaned forward on you wrist. I looked at a lot of race bike pics to and they all seem to be in this general area.
