new gas cap - now how do I attach it?
« on: November 04, 2005, 12:26:49 PM »
I just received a replacement chrome gas cap for my cb750k4. It's held to the tank with what appears to be a small, hollow rivet. Since the new cap didn't come with a replacement rivet, how do I attach it? I thought about a small screw and a nylock nut or something, but it is visible, so I'd like to use the stock method if possible. Anyone know where to obtain a replacement rivet? I'm kind of annoyed at this. I'm concerned I'll scratch/dent the tank by messing with the rivet, and I'll be worse off after replacing it than I was before. It looks like the kind that I'll have to hammer on vs a pop rivet type. AArrGGHH!

Have you considered those polished stainless steel hex head screws (about 2.50 each), expensive, but they sure are pretty.

I use a brass drift (tiny one) tape off the painted parts, and pound the rivet out towards the mushroom head end. Once the new cap is on and lined up, tap the old rivet back in and re-peen over the flat end. It'll hold. Getting the pin back in thru the spring is a bit tricky tho.
Good luck,

You used to be able to buy new ones there are two that I know of.
I will agree that the Chrome dome 1/8" bolt and dome nut looks great.

The cap rivet is still available from Honda, the catch rivet is obsoleted

I'll try that.

If the above doesn't work, I'll try to find a part number for the rivet. Anyone know what the number is?

If that fails, I'll try to find a small bolt/nut to do it. Thanks, everyone.
