Clear headlight from taiwan
« on: May 24, 2009, 12:35:08 PM »
Hey guys,

I popped a lowbeam on my 74 550K commuter bike.  I used to install the Hella or Piaa 5 3/4" headlight upgrades pretty frequently on these bikes.  I figured I'd look online first and found this on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130307443102&ssPageName=ADME:B:EF:MOTORS:1123

It's a replacement H-4 styled lamp complete with rings.  Has anyone out there tried one of these?  Any input would be appreciated before I send $50.00 half way around the world!

Thanks!

Hey folks,

Just thought I'd update here.  Full of trepidation, I purchased the headlight from ebay.  I opted for the 'rush" shipping.  It arrived in 5 days.

The rings are chromed steel, look nice.  The tabs are slightly "chintzy" feeling.  However, it fit perfectly into my bucket.  I had to move around some of the wiring bundles in there, as it's approx. 1/2" deeper than a stock sealed beam.  The lens itself is plastic, as is the reflector.  I won't be putting a 100 watt "squirrel burner" in there - I'm afraid it might melt!  However, it's really light, and HP to weight ratio is always in the back of my mind ;)

What a drastic improvement for night riding!  With the sealed beam I could barely see 75 feet down the road while riding home from work at 11PM.  This projects much clearer light waayyyy farther.

I left the 55/60W bulb in, at 3K rpm on high beam battery voltage is at 13.6.  Low beam at idle 13.2.  Also running a Dyna S, Dyna Coils, installed a solid state reg/rectifier from a Honda Magna.
