Topic: Cb500 shift drum guide screw

I am in the process of rebuilding a couple '72 cb500's. In the manual, it shows that the shift drum screw should tighten down upon a spring, the collar guide and a bearing. Both of the shift drum guide screws I have removed have not had the spring and bearing, and the collar guide fits over the lower portion of the guide screw.

I believe that what I'm seeing on the parts fiche is that there were two variations;



If this is the case that there were two variations released, is one way preferable over the other?

mine didnt have the spring, works just fine

I think that the spring solution was to obtain even more positive stops and therefore requires the small dimples where the little balls clicks into, it can be seen in the drum in the pic.

without those dimples, the spring action is useless, so unless you have them in your drum, you dont even have the choice.

Spring was early version of neutral detent which, along with the double ended horseshoe was modified and kit sent out for all 500's to the later type as in bottom LH corner + the stopper you have

guess detents were too positive.....

Nope they were crap and jumped gears, If you look on the site there are the bulletins for the 500 and in there is the mod kit list and instructions.
