Lowering would make it miss by even more Marti, but now that I know he moved the lever recently I can make a guess what has happened.
Remove your lever again and see how much spline is showing, it could be that when you put the lever back on that you pushed the shift shaft into the motor too far.
Hey it's a guess but if I'm right the cutaway notch where the securing bolt goes will be too close to the motor to accept the bolt so you end up just bolting onto the spline.
Grab the end of the shaft with a set of good grips and see if you can pull it back to you, if it looks OK or won't budge then it's either OK or has pushed out the clutch side of the motor and you may have a bigger job on taht you thought.
I've often pushed the shaft back into the crankcase on bikes when I didn't open the splines up before fitting the gear lever.
