Shift lever getting stuck

I was riding yesterday and noticed all of a sudden my shift lever was getting stuck every time I tried to shift up. So far the only way I found around it is to try and tap it down a little bit, but sometimes that forces a shift down. Not too fun! Any thoughts?

One more thing. After I put my new exhaust on I lost the center stand housing on the bottom of the old exhaust and made sure everything was getting clearance. Before getting on my bike to come home I looked at my chain and saw it was getting pushed up by the center stand  :o. I'm not sure how long this was going on for. I fixed the clearance issue by adding on a rubber boot to the end of the center stand and another on the frame to prevent it. Could this have caused my problem with my shifter?

does it feel like it's binding when you up shift...?? or it just doesn't "spring" down ???

I doubt that the two issues are connected, just coincidence.
Is your shift lever "slipping" on the end of the spline or is it internally "jamming"?
Sometimes owners fit the lever by leaving the threaded bolt in and hammering the lever back on, this ruins the binding capabilities of the levers' internal splines.
I'd remove the bolt then the lever and look for slippage inside the lever splines, if they are still sharp then your problem is internal and a completely new problem.
Sometimes just tightening the lever bolt can cure this......that's the easiest fix.....hope it's that.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

if it's not what hush suggested i can take pictures of what it looks like inside....mine is apart in that area...

It's not springing back down. It springs back up just fine when shifting to lower gears.

I haven't taken anything apart on it. All I've done is adjust the lever position and lowered it one notch so I could fit my fit in between the lever and the stator cover.

and before that it worked fine..????   it doesn't happen to rub against the side of the engine or something while up shifting,is it.?

Lowering would make it miss by even more Marti, but now that I know he moved the lever recently I can make a guess what has happened.
Remove your lever again and see how much spline is showing, it could be that when you put the lever back on that you pushed the shift shaft into the motor too far.
Hey it's a guess but if I'm right the cutaway notch where the securing bolt goes will be too close to the motor to accept the bolt so you end up just bolting onto the spline.
Grab the end of the shaft with a set of good grips and see if you can pull it back to you, if it looks OK or won't budge then it's either OK or has pushed out the clutch side of the motor and you may have a bigger job on taht you thought.
I've often pushed the shaft back into the crankcase on bikes when I didn't open the splines up before fitting the gear lever.

If it aint that I'm out of ideas sorry. ???

when I adjusted it the only thing i took of was the shift lever everything else stayed on. I'll try your idea out too.

After looking at the lever a little bit I noticed that it may have been getting caught on one of the bolts on the stator cover. I pulled the lever off and lowered it down one notch. This seems to have cleared up the problem. :)

Good man, a little investigation usually cures these head scratching problems. :)
