Springfield Mile AMA Pro Flat Track Nationals
« on: May 26, 2009, 10:12:29 AM »
Well despite all objections and recommendations from doctors, my parents, friends, family, and the weather....

I rode down there anyway. Fvck em. I stole my 83 Goldwing out of storage and surprised my parents on Friday morning. To be honest once we got up to speed on the highway I was quite comfortable. Getting on and off the bike was fun but no pain no gain right?

Springfield, IL is perhaps one of, if not THE, oldest flat track arenas left. It is the literal mecca of flat track racing and home to the National Championship races since the late 70's.

They wanted to put me in a wheelchair because it was a lot of walking and there was a lot of area to cover. I refused and hobbled my way into the bleachers. Had I been in better condition I would have gone into the pits with them, sorry Ecosse :'( My pride got the best of me.

There were two days of racing, Saturday night was the TT races, no pictures of that, my camera sucked in the dark, and Sunday afternoon was the National Pro and Expert runs. There were 64 riders and only 48 slots available to fill for points slots. So you can imagine that the competition was fierce!!

Two classes... 450cc singles and the Pro Twins 500-1000cc

The 450cc singles class is mainly the starting point for racing the twins. Any stock 450cc single with modifications made that are only available in the aftermarket. You need receipts and everything to pass tech.

Pro Twins is any twin 500-1000cc. Basically anything goes except major power adders like NOS and turbo/super charging. Must be carbed and must be retro fitted to race. I.E. safety wire. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Or so says the announcer.
Just to forewarn... this is mainly now a Harley dominated sport. Nothing seems to come close.

I only have a few pics and videos but despite being crippled I had an enormous amount of fun.

To the left of me is my mother and stepfather.... huge Harley fans. To the point of being creepy. :D To the right is my uncle. We all had a lot of fun.

And some pictures....

All in all I got some fresh air, sun, and the smell of race fuel in my lungs. Not to mention all kinds of rain on the way home. I loved it. When I got home though.... let the pain cometh.  8) Maybe I'll start taking painkillers after all.

;)Well, you beat me...... :P No way I could support the weight of my bike let alone a GW on my ankle/knee. I got on the cub and rode it to the back of the lot where the trailer is(100') and back with the crutch in the rack. Looks like you are improving quickly(due to your young age no doubt). I just hope to be able to go back into the cockpit soon and start the new job. Have no plans to ride the magna until it is repaired. Maybe get the 750 k4 down to bike nite in a couple of weeks if I am still in town. Congrats maybe...... or "are you crazy"  :-\ are in order......get well soon.... ;D

Well a dislocated leg hurts the first time you've ever done it. Not that it doesn't hurt anymore... but not nearly as much as it could.

The hardest thing was throttle control with my right arm. I push my limits sometimes but having a seperated shoulder combined with the vibration of the bike and my arm position warranted a throttle stop for resting sessions while on the road.

In town though I had to work through the pain.  :-[

I still regret nothing lol.  ;D

HavTurb,

Great pics and video.
I visited the Sprgfld mile in '66, I think.
Rode my 305 Scrambler all the way from Chicago.
I was sitting on top of the fence inside turn 1.
Riders at the front went down in the first turn--3 dead.

After that I don't think they held races for 20 years.
I do like flat track, though.

Well I know in the 80's we went to a few, but it's been a LONG time since I've been. Despite my lack of mobility it made me feel like a kid again.  ;D

I think so. Owner says it's a 990 engine shoehorned into their small dirtbike chassis.

Whatever it is it totally smoked almost everything out there.

looking at the bike again it reminds me of a motard (hate that name). looks like a monster in the picture, so it must be a sight up close!
