CX 500 Brake Query
« on: May 27, 2009, 11:52:15 AM »
Anyone have a quick fix or recommendation for very squeaky brakes at low speeds? I recently purchased a '79 Honda CX550 in great condition. Runs well, leaks nothing and starts every time. Super fun bike. However, at low speeds, my brakes squeak like crazy. Even when I'm not holding the front brake lever, it'll squeak a little bit at the same spot every time the wheel turns. My guess is maybe a warped or uneven rotor. Any suggestions on how to fix this? It's mind-numbingly annoying.

Thanks for your help.

You don't really fix warped rotors. You replace them.

For starters, you could chamfer the edges of the brake pads, and cut a nice long groove all teh way across it in the same direction as the radius of the spokes (i.e. radiating away from the axle).
No.

I believe you have either a CX500 or CX650. I'm not aware of a CX550.

What do your brake pads look like? My bike did the same thing, and it turns out my pads were down to just about nothing. Replacing the brake fluid and installing new pads cleared up the issue.

Ahhh yes. Sorry. Typo there. It is a CX500. Thanks for the advice. Nice little weekend project. Take care.
