"Puck" Seals under Valve Cover
« on: May 29, 2009, 07:55:37 am »
Hey all,

On my '71 cb500/F, I think I may need to replace the puck seals I've heard about leaking, making it look like a gasket leak.  I'm not familiar with replacing these, and thought I'd ask before I tore into it.  Where exactly are they located, and how many are there?  Thanks in advance!

Under the valve cover? I don't think there are any- there aren't any on a 350, anyway. Sure you don't mean under the head or block?

I wasn't sure either, I thought they were CB750 only. But i looked it up on a hondaparts-direct.com fiche and sure enough there are 6 of them. They go between the valve cover and the head, inside the circumference of the cover so you can't see them unless you remove the cover.

On the CB750 there are 4, under the cam towers, which block off the access holes to 4 small head bolts. I suspect they do the same job on the 500, covering access to some smaller head bolts.

Thanks Boxnife, I may take you up on that.  Did you replace your puck seals, and where did you get them?  I'm rebuilding my whole front end this weekend or next week as well.  I actually saw your bike at your house, almost pulled up as I was on mine but didn't want to freak you out, since we haven't met!
