'74 550 question-- little clip under crankcase cover?

Where the heck does this little clip go?  I pulled off the crankcase cover today and it fell out, and i can't figure out where it goes.

any help much appreciated!

I don't know what this, but that is the cleanest sprocket area I have ever seen.  I wish I had mine that clean.

it kinda looks like the neutral light connector thingy :-\ :-\
