Funky oil plug behind magneto
« on: May 28, 2009, 12:45:53 pm »
So I took the magneto off to polish the cover.  Stupidly I tried starting the engine with the magneto off.  An oil plug shot out of the left side of the engine and oil went gushing all over.  Now after sticking the plug back in, it drips all the time when the engine is running.

Questions:

What is that plug for?

Why is it being a pain to get the leaking to stop?

Pull the cover again, remove the plug and replace the o-ring (on the plug) It must have been damaged when you reinstalled it. It's an access to the main oil gallery.

Get a new plug - they don't cost much - I don't know about there being an O ring in there - have not seen one - or mine might be missing as well.

The plug is as stated to stop oil exiting the motor, but you should use the right plug as
the oil flows up from the plug and into the main oil feed for the gearbox and clutch..

I stopped mine from leaking, and after quite a few months discovered my manufactured plug actually blocked the entire oil feed line (pushed in too far) - then I had a dry rusty clutch - which had disintegrated.....

The main oil gallery goes across the upper case around oil filter height (the centre of the oil filter connects to it).
There's a threaded plug on the right end of it, and a simple plug with an O-ring on the left side, not threaded, held in by the alternator cover.
So don't run the engine with the cover off :)
Probably just a new 13x2.5 O-ring will fix you up, the old hard one likely would have leaked just from being pulled out and reinstalled let alone shooting out and bouncing around.
