Oil light works, only when motor is HOT?
« on: May 31, 2009, 04:21:54 PM »
Up 'till now I had given up on my motor oil light.
I have in the past traced the wiring, replaced the bulb with KNOWN good ones, and don't ever remember seeing it on.( a good thing?)
Before last weekend anyways.

After about 20+ miles every time I shut off the engine it would light up.
When shutting the bike down, I use the kill switch first, then switch the ignition key off.
Just normal protocol for me.

Good to know it works, but is it normal for it to need warming up like that?
BTW, bike is a '79cb650.
Still has (as far as I know) the factory stock pressure switch on the oil pump.

my K2 750 is kinda like that.  The idiot light for the oil pressure won't work until the bike is warmed up a little.  Just put a gauge on it ;)

On my 79 the oil light is on when I turn the ignition on, and goes of when the engine starts up, hot or could. It then lights back on 1/2 a second after I kill the engine with the kill switch, again, hot or could.

My bike did that, turned out to be gunk inside the switch. Take the OPS out and give it a spray with some carb cleaner, follow up with a shot of compressed air.Make sure it`s CARB (or nowadays probably Throttle body) cleaner, many "brake" cleaners do not have the solvents necessary to un-gunk the innards. Worked for me but I`m cheaper than dirt so actually BUYING a new one was out of the question unless absolutely necessary. ;D

Yeah I had that problem.

Like everyone said...Gunk.

One word of caution....compressed air at 120 PSI may not be the best thing to spray in a Pressure switch.....

Not saying it will....but it may damage the switch.

The switches are cheap ($3-$4) at auto parts stores if you do need a replacement.  I just handed them the old Honda part and they went in the back room and came back with what looked like an identical piece.  As far as I can tell, they're all set to trigger at about 5-7 psi.
