Cunfused again
« on: May 30, 2009, 11:50:43 AM »
Just finished replacing the front wheel bearings and dust seals on my 78 750k.  It has Comstars.  Everything went together with no problem, and I mocked it up to ensure the speedo hub works before I clean it and paint it.  Well, as you can see by the pictures, I have 1/2" of exposed axle.  To my untrained eye, this seems like a bad thing.

Is it supposed to be this way?  Or is there some explanation?

What pictures? If it's what I think your talking about, maybe you're missing a spacer?

See in the picture #2, the spacer has wear/contact marks on it. I dn't see what it could have been touching. YOur sequence of assembly is wrong.

The speedo drive looks like it would foul the fork leg. We need an exploded view to get the assembly right.

Doesn't the hex on the axle nut go towards the hub, not at the end?

That's exactly what I did to mine.
Make sure the speedo hub is on the left side, check your rub marks on your axle and flip that nut over.
OH! and there is a tiny lip that goes into the hub on the speedo, if you look at it while it's off, it has perfect little teeth, they must line up to fit in the holes or else it won't be flush.

I see what you are saying.  I cant find an exploded view of a comstar thats not on an F, which has dual disks.

Speedo hub and disk on left?

Yea duuuude. Actually now that I'm looking, I think the only thing wrong is that nut. Flip it and you should be golden.

I did the SAME thing. I panicked for 3 minutes and looked at the picture i took before I removed everything. I've decided that's the best practice for me In a messy garage with a bf that likes to come in and "help" while I'm gone at work.  ;D
