That hole you filled in was a mistake, its part of the crankcase venting system
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

I don't think so, there is another manufactured opening to that area which has kind of a baffle that stops the oil flowing in there, to just let in the vapor - I did not fill up that one. The one I filled in, when seen in person, is more obviously a hole and I have the missing piece to prove it.
