550 Igition Timing Problem
« on: May 31, 2009, 10:33:14 am »
I'm really confused now.  I went to check the timing on my 550 and discovered the 2-3 set were bang on but the 1-4 were about 25 degrees advance.  I bought a new set of points and condensers and replaced them but got the same result. I thought maybe I go the cam backwards on the advance but after I switched it was way worse so I put it back to the original position. I set the point gap to .016 so I decided to close up the gap and that helped a bunch and now it's about 10-15 degrees advanced.  Any ideas about what the problem is.  I've got the plate all of the way in one direction and this doesn't seem right.

Are you using the points plate for adjusting 1-4 and the breaker arm for 2-3? On mine, I had to somewhat "compromise" between timing and points gap to tweak the timing when I ran out of adjustment. A week later I went electronic. :)

Just   got done reading that link and man does it help. I finally get how adjust the points now.   But question  when setting up cylinders 2,3 do you have to put the timming gun on cylinder 2 or just leave it at 1?  still don't understand that part.
Keep it shinny side up.

Awesome! Glad that link helped. Yup, you have to switch plug wires on the timing gun to do 2/3. I do my 1-4 from my No. 1 wire and 2-3 from my No.2 wire. :) Did you get it timed? It's amazing how much smoother everything runs after. :)
