Long distance seating
« on: May 31, 2009, 08:54:05 PM »
I was wondering if anyone had tried anything to improve comfort for long distance riding - but retaining the stock seat.

I don't like the look of any king & queen or "scooped" seat on these bikes. I like the way the stock seats look and they're great for around town. On long highway rides tho, where you don't get to shift around at stoplights and such I find it gets to be a bit like riding around on a sawhorse after a couple of hours. Plus there's all that ahemmm.... chafing.

Has anyone found a good temporary "seat enhancer"? I thot of trying a butt donut like those used for tail bone injuries etc, but I haven't tried it yet.

Any other ideas? I'm considering a long trip on the SOHC...

get a sheepskin pad.  A few people have tried it here and they're way worth it.  they're available from a company like 'alaska leather' or something like that.  Plus they stay cooler in the summer/warmer in the winter than just vinyl.

Edit:
Here. Buttpads.

Wow its certainly turning out to be a week for the thin-skinned among us (in more ways than one  ;D)....

I have rode loooooong distance on my CB750 with stock seat and never had a problem with ahem..chaffing...this isnt the army you know  ;)...you are not running a marathon ;-)...in theory you are sitting there doing bugger all for hours on end..anyway Ill not doubt you have a problem as clearly you do...heres a suggestion from the ADV riders forum (long distance riders) - black sheepskin  - they sell it in convenient motorcycle size and you can put it on, take it off as you like...I think it straps on and apparently works wonders for those with sensitive skin ;-)

cheers
Andy

I think sheepskin can help, also they used to make gel or water pads for them.
Not sure how far you want to ride in a day, but 600 miles on a stock, is nit hard to do..

Personally I have been in the habit of putting my passenger pegs down for long rides.
It's not "the" fix I want but it allows me to change seating position(as well as leg position) to keep my butt from falling asleep.

I try to switch from stock position to the rear foot pegs every 30-40 miles.
Then back after about another 30-40 miles.
Might look funny... but as I said it keeps my butt (strangely the left cheek) from falling asleep.
If I don't switch up like that eventually my entire left leg goes numb after about 150 miles.

I personally like using the rear pegs, with lower bars and fairing it actually puts me in a perfect seating arrangement.I thought about rearsets but I like the choice I have with both.I am going to be doing a 2400 mile round trip in a few weeks and I am sure the stock seat going to be fine.Riding from Bellingham Wa to Laguna Seca.(Bellingham is about 15 min to Canadia)Should be interesting on my old cb750.

That's one reason highway pegs were so popular, they'd allow you to change position.  Back when my bikes were newish, I ran the hoop type highway bars and switched between them, the regular pegs, and the passsenger pegs on long rides.
I'm with the OP, I like the look of the stock seat, but for me they're too tall and wide for me to be really comfortable, and while most bucket seats are comfortable most of them are taller than stock so they're no good, so most of my bikes have had cafe style seats on them.

Ken.

I got this from Corbin in 1994. they told me at the time that was the last one they do. It wasa custom one-off piece and they were getting out of that. More money in mass produced harley seats i guess.  They may have changed their minds by now.

Also there is an outfit in Florida http://www.sargentcycle.com/ that makes seats that look like this but on a more custom one-off basis.

The passenger seat is right about where the stock would be. The operator seat is scooped but with better quality foam and a pebble surface cover it is very comfortable.

You may want to try a gel seat pad or cushion, available in Canada at Canadian Tire and I believe WalMart in the US. I got mine on sale for under $10. Here's a link to read about it http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/4/Auto/AutoAccessories/SeatCushions/PRD~0321419P/Gel%2BSeat%2BCushion.jsp

I have one on my GoldWing and it's very comfortable and good reports from long distance riders on the GoldWing forum. It's a bit large for the 750 seat but............
Cheers,
Cliff.

Sorry my post did not address the "temporary seat enhancer" nature of your post.

I would vote for sheepskin as well.    http://www.blacksheeptrading.com/mtrcyccov.html

A google of "motorcycle seat sheepskin" will turnup quite an industry of suppliers.

Thx guys.

So far I'm leanign toward the sheepskin/gel combo that Alaska Leather offers in the link Kit provided. They want a full Benjamin for it so I might poke around for a cheaper substitue.

MCRider your seat is cool.

I recall Ed Allyn and his Allyn Air Seat which is really a cover that you add over your existing seat, which generally had favorable feedback from high-milers.  Looks like it's now called the Eagle Air Seat, unless it's always been called that and I'm just accessing a faulting memory from 20 years ago.

The Airhawk is another "air seat".
