GSXR 250 in bits, any bad points
« on: June 05, 2009, 02:04:23 AM »
OK my son has been looking for a bike project to rebuild (yeah I'll probably do 99% of work) and he has found a rice rocket he likes.
It's a 91 GSXR250 in pieces (many pieces) but has spare motor etc and whole bike is there, fairings are good too.
Will suit my son cos he likes these kneck breakers and as a rider who has yet to get a full bike licence he is only allowed to ride up to 250cc by New Zealand law (he's a cop so better obey law).
Anyhow, anyone know good bad points of these beasts, it will be a mystery journey for me as I have not worked on one before but hey I learn fast and a bike is a bike is a bike, doesn't matter if it's 30 years old or less..two wheels...I'll fix it. :D
He's paying $1000 for the whole thing and rebuilt they sell for $3000-$3500 so will probably cost as much to rebuild but I love a challenge and the 2 bikes I was working on are all but finished.
Anyone owned a GSXR 250?
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

A baby GIXXER is good thing!  I can't offer any advice except I love my 86 750  GIXXER.
I read that they were a fun ride!

A Darlek master?  Doctor Who is in the house. I believe I have seen every episode.

I haven't heard of that bike here in the US, maybe some members from other parts of the world can offer insight.  Sounds like a good start to a project though, spare engine, good plastics, etc..  It's probably a great handling, quick stopping, lightweight with a really high red line, right?  I'm kicking that concept around for my next project....
Cheers.

Here's another possible for him. They all about $500 and in need of some love.
The Aprilia is an import from Japland but the guy cannot get it road legal here for some reason so it's going for about $500 too, not bad for a 2003 bike.

They are a favorite of riders who only have a learners licence, here in New Zealand you can ride up to 50cc with a car licence then when you get a learners bike licence it's up to 250cc.
With a full bike licence of course the sky is the limit, shame we can't do that with cars, you can get a twin turbo rice rocket or supercharged 5 litre V8 here on your learner car licence so it's one of those unfair anti bike laws.
Hey I agree with the graduated licence laws, just think it should apply equally to cars too. :)

yeah, here any 16 year old squid can walk into a suzuki dealership and with no experience buy a hayabusa, you dont even have to have a license to buy one, and you can ride on a learners permit as well.

was the gsxr250 ever available here in the states? i think i might try to find one for myself as an around town commuter. if it's anywhere near in size to the ninja 250 it's not too small for me

Not that I know of.

And I'd avoid anything less than an 08 Ninja 250. Those poor little bikes are usually beat to #$%* from their learning PO's.

Now a 500 might be right up your alley there Cat.  ;)
