Moped riders
« on: June 02, 2009, 03:09:09 PM »
Normally I am am an 'to each his own' type of guy, but come on! They are popping up everywhere and that's great for them but I just saw a local posting for a moped gang. there are just as many moped shops in my town as there are motorcycle dealerships. I can understand wanting a bike an not being able to afford one  but my 750 was only 800 bucks and now they have mopeds that are 4 grand and up with remote start on them!
Owning one and riding one is one thing but when you start emulating biker culture and ride a 49cc toy around town I think you're basically castrating yourself in public.

ROFL  :D

Would I be castrating myself if I had both?

I'd ride a scooter almost every day they are so much fun, but I almost always end up looking like a queer. Imagine harcore biker look on a little 150cc scooter with luggage on the back.

So I sold it.

Yeah, a moped gang is pushing it a bit far.  Actually, I think the other biker gangs are kind of stupid too.

But mopeds in general don't annoy me.  My litmus test is this:  If I ask someone what kind of spark plugs they have in their bike, and they cannot answer, then they probably annoy me.  In other words, the fools that don't put any love into their machines.  The spark plug litmus test is not foolproof, but more times than not someone that actually works on their bike knows what plugs they have.

I have a Honda Ruckus by the way....   :)

Dude they were all over England in the 50's and 60's. This is nothing new, it's another trend. It'll make it's revolution and fade off then come back when you are in your 40's. Just watch.

Yeah... I don't claim to be a mechanical expert, and there are folks here that truly amaze me with their knowledge of these machines.  I don't actually go around asking folks about their spark plugs, but you can kind of sense the ones that don't truly appreciate motorcycling and their machines.

For some people it's just another car. As long as it runs and there are people around to fix it for them, they are perfectly happy. Doesn't make them any less of a rider in my eyes.

I would totally ride that Lambretta that Ecosse posted the video of. I don't care if I would look like a tool, I would smoke damn near everything on the road!

You'd have to rebuild it about every other day. Bet it goes through rings like a mofo.

Yeah... that's okay. I'd still ride it.

Back to the topic at hand.

It's not like mopeds are some brand new vehicle. There is nothing wrong with riders of mopeds forming a gang. I was unaware that motorcyclists had a monopoly on that.

The thing that pisses me off is that all of the moped riders I see are college girls that have no idea how to ride them.  The way they dart in and out of traffic (and up on to the sidewalks,) it's amazing that there aren't smashed mopeds/college girls everywhere.  Well, the college girls are usually smashed, but it's jagermeister that does the smashing.

Yeah... that's okay. I'd still ride it.

I want moped gangs to have rumbles down by the tracks with zip guns and switchblades, just like the Greasers and the Socs.

Have an old bike, 100 bucks, and a free weekend? These are fun to build.

I rode mine back and forth to campus a bunch and then sold it for a profit.

In the early 80's they got quite popular.  (Peugout (sp?)  They used to bore them out and do something with the clutch, add a bigger carb and would do something like clip-ons.  Then they raced.  I think they got to about 80mph.

This was in So. Cal.  There, you will see anything.  Even a hearst 4x4 on 44in mudders, same as a caddy coupe deville the same way.

Oh well.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Hmmm....  I'm confused - moped or scooter?

Moped army site seems clearly dedicated to the moped - MOtorized 2-wheeler that still can be PEDaled if desired.

Scooters, though, don't have any pedal capability at all.  Offshoots of the original 12" donut-tired vehicle...  Now available in 400 & 650cc varieties...

Burnboy, which is the kind that set you off originally?

Mopeds don't do a thing for me, although I had one that I rode all over town in 1980 when I was 15.  It was legal then for 15 year old to do so before I got my "normal" license.  Scooters didn't get that status then - they were just another "motorcycle" in the eyes of the law.  My moped, with my considerably-lighter-back-then self would go 45mph.  Plenty for what I wanted it to do...   :)  It was a Motobecane that I found at the dump one day.  Needed wheels and a gas cap, but otherwise it worked perfectly once my Dad and I carted it home.

Nowadays, I'd skip the moped, but I wouldn't mind having a 250cc Big Ruckus.   ;D

*edit*  BTW, thanks for the thread - you got me off my duff to go hunt down a photo of that moped.  Found it.  It's dated April 1981.  I turned 16 that September.  Then, from the Moped Army site, I actually determined that I must've had a late-70s / early 80s Ranger 7 model.  I never knew that till now.  Huh.   :)

Moped, no thanks but I talked to a guy at the gas station yesterday who was filling up a restored 1965 150cc Vespa.  It was pretty cool even though he sounded kinda "French". ;D ;D ;D
