Need New Bike Now
« on: June 03, 2009, 12:35:00 PM »
My K6 engine isn't happy enough to ride and is demanding a tear down and rebuild.  See my thread for backstory ---> http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=52436.msg560151#msg560151

Anyway, I've not given up on SOHC4's.  With some $, time, and wrenching I'll have the K6 tourer and the Rickman faired F3 on the road.

Thing is I work too hard to have to work on a bike to ride it.  That's the way all my bikes have been, and with my recent breakdown I'm a lot frustrated at the amount of work necessary to get me back riding.

This brings me to the topic of this post.  I need a new(er) low maintenance bike now.  So I can go out and ride in this preciously rare weather we have now.

I would like to stick with Honda but nothing they have made in the last 20 years inspires me.  I'm a little inspired by the 919 I guess.  I see the new Ducati Sport Classic line and my heart goes thump thump.  Holy $$$ though...  I would like to stick with Honda, but have thought about the Ducati and other bikes as well.

I like the classic look, will sit from standard to forward (no cruisers) would like something that didn't have anemic power, and a bike with less plastic than more.   I don't ride for long stints, probably 1.5 hours tops.  I'm searching the web but haven't spied anything yet...  Could probably spend 6K or less...

A good friend of mine is willing to sell me his 1997 Ducati 900ss CR  (Cafe Racer)

3K meticulous miles, never at red line, and nearly spotless.  for @ $5K

Thinking hard about it.  Here he is on it...

Ben,

Sorry to hear your woes... I have my 1100 Honda Aero up for sale... Yes its a cruser but, a nice one... Call my cell if you want more info....

I'll PM you the number.

The Ducati is nice, but, do you really want to spend that much time leaning sooo far down on those old wrists?  :P

Next August will be my 50th! and on my 50th, I am going to buy a Ducati GT1000!

Even if you're not interested in the Cruizer , maybe I can help you find something...

Sigh

That my friend is my all time favorite bike.

I had a 96 900SS CR in red that would make even jesus cry. Sigh.

I'd go for it but the seating position has made a point. Maybe the GT1000 is a better choice in the long run.

I suggest the 1998 Honda VTR Superhawk!!!!

Really nice bikes that are bullet proof...well duh it's a honda :)

And the riding position is pretty darn comfortable.....

Just my 2 cents ;D

All those do have a certain Panache......

I would add that the new "old" styled offerings from Triumph are attractive...

FJR1300 - I have always dug that bike.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

I would recommend the 94-99 magna v4 but it is a cruiser bike although they call it a sport bike in a cruiser frame. One kick-ass bike though. Even outruns a Valkyrie and a vtx while getting between 40-55 mpg. I geared mine down (rear sprocket drop from 40 to 36) and notice very little loss of torque. 1st gear 55mph @ redline, 2nd 90mph, scared to take third to redline. 5th at 3.8k = 75mph. Redline=9600

I'm the same way - got to have at least one bike ready to jump on and ride.

Don't know if I'd put "Ducati" and "low maintenance bike" in the same paragraph.  But the older Supersports do get me going too.

For 5-6K, the world is yours.  You could have any of these with money left over:

Kawasaki ZRX1100 or 1200
Suzuki Bandit
Yamaha FZ1
Honda 919

I'd personally go for a cheap mechanically sound early 90's sportbike from any of the big 4 and use the extra cash for rebuilding the old SOHC4's.  The ergonomics weren't too extreme back then and that offensive plastic comes right off.

I've always wanted a Triumph - old or new.   I'd take a look at some used Bonnevilles from a few years ago, they seem to hang around the $5k mark, and don't have so many darn carbs.  Seems like people don't put too many miles on them before they put them up for sale, and the looks are hard to beat.
One day, I will put up a signature.

Ben,

If you'd like to bring the Honda over to my shop, we can break it open and check it out. I have plenty of room  and a jack in the barn...

3 words for you...new triumph bonneville
Of all God's creatures there is only one that cannot be made the slave of the lash. That one is the cat. If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve man, but it would deteriorate the cat.
