i've always been curious about that rear suspension. have anything to share about it?

Those are decals--very delicate and I almost screwed them up completely--the situation was salvaged, however.
The rear vertical tube has a big spring in it as well as a grease fitting.
With grease pumped in tight you get a full 3/4 inch of vertical travel.
The seat springing more than compensates for the almost rigid rear end.

yeah, i don't know what i was thinking there was a leaf spring in there somewhere. that just don't make no sense.

interesting that the enclosed coil spring is packed in grease.

Yeah- I always considered them a hardtail.  Interesting that the seat is on the chummy seat frame.  Hows that feel compared to the post/spring set-up?  Is the drive chain on the right side?  Don't I remember them being on the left?  Is that a late 30's model?
Did you find it at an auction?  Yard sale?  How's it run? (or does it...?)

I wanted to move the seat back about a foot (fit me better-looked cooler etc.) so I needed the additional chum-me
rig which is actually off an old Harley, of course. The spring post is still in place.
Drive chain is on the right. It's a '48 Chief.  Some of the 20's and 30's Chiefs and Scouts had my fender set up.
I'm just too cheap to drop the $600 each for the valenced fenders.
I bought it off a guy in Oxnard, California in 1968 for $250.
It still runs !

My last one was a '48, too.  For the life of me, I can't figure out why I remember the chain being on the left...  A friend helped put Guzzi Eldo fenders on after I got T-boned on it.  I actually liked it better, for some reason.  Those glass tail light lenses are sure a PITA, though.  What a dumb design.

I'm afraid I'm not able to wherehouse more than a couple of bikes. 
Oh well...

Never liked the look of that tail light either.
I made mine out of a micro ammeter.

I cut down a B&W polycontrast photographic
printing filter #4.
And taped it up against the glass on the inside.
It's actually a little on the purple side !

Lucky for you it doesn't have to pass safety inspection because of the antique tags.

In North Carolina, NOTHING over 35 yo has to be inspected. 
Kind of counter-intuitive, actually...  but it saves me some money.
