Term clarification
« on: November 07, 2005, 09:01:35 PM »
I am currently reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle repair by Robert M. Pirsing, and he often uses the term 'point'. For example in the begining of the book he's talking about how his bike broke down on the side of the road and says "Gas seemed to be sloshing around inside . I looked at the plugs, and looked at the points, and looked at the carberator..." What the heck is a point  ???

It has been a while since I read it.
It would help if you used an actual sentence with the word "point" so I could have a point of reference to help out.

Sorry dude, I thought you were referring to some esoteric  sort of reference in the book

YEAH, points...."A very important part of the electrical system on your bike" If they are not set correctly your bike don't run.

I believe his point in that sentence was sort of written for guys like him at the time "with out a clue"
Gas OK, Points ugh huh, carburetors still there...now what? The author is trying to compare bikes with life............some people embrace technology, some don't.

Good luck with the book and your ride 8)

Its part of the distributor  An electrical contact, especially one in the distributor of an automobile engine i believe it runs off the camshaft and is under the little chrome cover above the spark plugs

Good luck with the book. I found it quite heavy going...

Do you have the later version with the epilogue?  I won't say what's in it as it'll ruin your read.

BTW - don't know why they're called "points" - look here:  http://216.239.59.104/search?q=cache:Q_ebBbvwl6AJ:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contact_breaker+points+contact+breakers&hl=en

Ok, but what is the point of having points if you never get the point?
Just thought I would point that out,
in other words, to give you my point of view on having points.
HOpe you get the point.

My copy came from the local Oxfam (thrift) shop for about 50p I think. It's from 1989.

Pirsig added the Epilogue in 1984 and I must admit it shocked me.

SteveD, since we're on page two now and I have an earlier copy the book, spill the new ending....

I got the book early too I  guess. Took me 3 tries to get through it, though. It's about esoteric philosophy that's rather basic to a good mans life which really rather brings it back down to earth. If you get my meaning... So what's the big shock?

This girlfriend attention brings up another question I've had for some time; If I want to see the details of someones face or bike in an avatar, is there a way to enlarge it?

OK here goes.

The "Afterword is 7 pages long and was written in 1984:

" ... the receding Ancient Greek perspective of the past ten years has a very dark side.  Chris is dead.

He was murdered.  At about 8:00pm on Saturday November 17th 1979, in San Fransisco, he left the Zen Center, where he was a student, to visit a friend's house a block away on Haight Street.

According to witnesses, a car stopped on the street beside him and two men, black, jumped out.  One came from behind him so that Chris couldn't escape, and grabbed his arms.  The one in front of him emptied his pockets and found nothing and became angry.  He threatened Chris with a large kitchen knife.  Chris said something which the witnesses could not hear.  His assailant became angrier.  Chris then said something that made him even more furious.  He jammed the knife into Chris's chest.  Then the two jumped into their car and left.

Chris leaned for a time on a parked car, trying to keep from collapsing.  After a time he staggered across the street to a lamp at the corner of Haight and Octavia.  Then, with his right lung filled with blood from a severed pulmonary artery, he fell to the sidewalk and died."

I must admit that, after ploughing through the book, you do gain a certain affinity with Chris and this ending quite shocked me.  I also have an 18 year old son called Chris...

Oh, and the above is Copyright Robert M Pirsig.

John - I posted the Wikipedia link a few pages back.

I think we should have a "how far can a thread stray off subject and still end up back with the original question" competition.

Maybe Glenn can run the entire site through some sort of contextual parser (?)

Beam me up Scotty.
