DON'T DO IT!!!!!  DON'T DO IT!!!!!

X-ring or o-ring chain will slowly eat a hole through the engine case on a 550.  Everything seems fine on the centerstand, but riding stress makes the sprocket go sideways slightly or something, and one day after a couple hundred miles you discover a puddle of oil under your bike.  Ask me how I know.

Instead, just get the Tsubaki 530 QR Pro-gold chain.  It is very high quality, and looks freaking killer!!!!!  I got mine from Dennis Kirk.

Is the same true for a 650?  I have a 530 gold X ring chain I got free...   :(

I am machining the front sprocket on the side where the key way plate bolts on, will give me the extra clearence to run the x ring.... its not true for the 650 as far as i know only the 550

Sunuva...

Do you think it's kosher to mate two of their chains together to make one?  hehehe.  I'd still be saving some green on that.

at one point i had three master links in a dirt bike chain haha... i wouldnt recomend it though, motorcycles put alot more nut on the chain than dirt bikes.

Well shucks.  Ill be pushing 100hp, so I guess I'll just pass.  Some other day I guess.  But gold would have worked out nicely.

my gold x-ring is so big it chewed up my side cover on my 750. I ended filing the outside edge of the cover and shimming the bolts on the inside.
everything I say is pure speculation and
I have no idea what I'm talking about  ._.

i don't have the rivet style, (like grimace) i have the removable one. I turned it around so the pins don't stick out and grind the notch in my sprocket cover ever again.

tell me more about this sprocket mod. got pics? you're basically "scooping out" under the retaining plate? how do you keep it from floating down the shaft and eating the case? on which materials is this a viable concept?

Well, i got the idea from FunJimmy, the sprocket i have is a cheapo 15t off ebay. big thick and steel. your correct i am "scooping out? under the plate. i am going to measure the difference in the old and new chain and have that amout taken out. fun jimmy put a washer behind the sprocket but i really dont see the need since the plate is bolted to the sprocket it should hold it out against the plate, which is in the keyway on the shaft.

oh, right. my uncaffeinated mind plays stupid tricks on me.

so, metallurgy-wise, you're confident that there's plenty left to handle the forces involved? (not my area of expertise, just curious)

that M words pretty big... yes by my best guess and garage thinkin i dont see an issue removing .1-.15 off the sprocket. my 550 doesnt have the HP of a modern day litre bike, as much as i wish it did some days. so i dont think it should cause an issue.
