OK to Dip 350F Carbs?
« on: June 09, 2009, 03:46:58 PM »
Wondering if it's ok to dip 350F carbs in the gallon-o-carb-cleaner that's sold at most auto part stores. I seem to remember there being a small plastic tab on the inside of the carb body that guides the slide. I would hate to have the carb cleaner dissolve it.

Thanks,
Adam

FYI any rubber parts will quadruple or septuple in size when exposed to that kind of carb cleaner.

That is an inconceivably egregious transgression against my rudimentary concordance of socially shunned individuals.

Adam,

I highly recommend stopping into a Yamaha dealer and picking up a bottle of Yamaha Carb Cleaner.  Buy one of the large aluminum foil cheap meatloaf pans from your local Wal-Mart, add water to double the volume.  Dunk your carbs, if you have access to a camping stove heat the batch to a low boil.  Once it hits a certain tempature, no kidding, the brew will instantly release all gunk/crap.  It works wonderfully.

I'm of course going to completely disassemble them - there is a permanently installed plastic nub in the carb which guides a slot cutout in the side of the slide. Will carb-cleaner dissolve this?

Permanently installed?  I don't recall seeing this in mine.

I had disassembled and cleaned as described with no problems.  I do not recall any plastic items that I could not remove and clean seperately.

He's referring to the the plastic nub that sets the slot in the pic below in place. I've soaked my 350f carbs a few times (B9 chemdip, random carb cleaner) and that piece has been completely impervious to it.
