Sprocket carrier movement?
« on: April 17, 2009, 02:36:40 AM »
The sprocket carrier, thats also the cush drive on the 550 is held into place by a large bearing retaining ring. When the Bearing retaining ring is done up, is there supposed to be any side to side movement from the spocket carrier?

I am guessing there should be some as the cush drive rubbers would allow for some movement. But there just seems to be a fair bit, or have i missed something?

I have sorted the problem and maybe a WARNING for all. I was in a bit of a rush when i pulled the wheels apart and used a punch to undo the bearing retainer( they have four holes in them where a tool should sit to undo them)

Anyway i didnt realise until now, months later and only now putting the wheels back together. That by using a punch to undo the retainer it has burred the holes and the excess steel  raised the hole instead of being a flat surface. This isnt allowing the retainer to sit flush against the sprocket carrier, so the sprocket carrier had a mm of play.

Word of warning dont use a punch to undo the retainer when changing wheel bearings, make a tool with four prongs that sit in the retainer. ::)
