CB750 K0

What washers are supposed to be on the oil tank drain plug? The parts manual suggests two, of different sizes.

I have on cupped washer that leaks.

They're really dirt cheap, I'd order up a set, the other one will probably fit your sump's drain plug.

They are 12mm washers, same one is used for the oil pan drain as well. Buy a fist full, change them each time is my advice.

The Honda dealer looked them up for me when I bought other oil change supplies. They recommended replacing them every other oil change.

Sounds like you have the non-standard. You want what is called a "crush" washer.

Yours is standard just crushed down all the way. They cup when smashed down. Have to cut off carefully with a hacksaw. don't need to change every other oil change, just when crushed way down. Dan

I think I used to get them off with Vise Grips..IIRC

Grab the OD of washer, and turn bolt out with wrenchorsocket.

I reused them a lot, just wipe them off and make sure they are clean, I never torqued them real tight, if you are careful you will find they dont have to be real tight, but check a few times to see that they dont loosen.

If they have never been replaced they should be. Both drain plugs use the same crush washer. Dan

They dont just start leaking. They usually leak from grit getting in between the surfaces while tightening. Thise should have been wiped off clean anyway.

I from experience know better that to try to change out a non-leaking part, just because it is a "good idea". That is just asking for something to go wrong.

I will sometimes buy new parts like this "just in case", and end up not using them for years. Then there are other times I totally miss the obvious until it's too late.

However, particularly in the case of the oil pan washer, how many posts have we seen re: cracked pans, usually around the drain hole. Guess what's causing it?

Overtightening..
There comes a point, when checking a leaking assembly , that if it is already tight, you should realize, the sealing element needs replacing. Further tightening usually causes damage. (espescially in aluminum)

That being said though, Carefully cleaning the grit off the washers, has resulted in long life for many.

I am trying to recall, if I ever changed them in at least 50 K on cb 750,s .

Would a worn out washer cause the bolt not to tighten? I changed the oil today and the bolt would get finger tight then loosen as I turned it with a socket. At finger tight, it seems to seal the oil while running but leaks fairly badly when not running (a drip every 20 seconds or so). I am afraid that I've got stripped threads. Any thoughts?

Mine doesn't have one. Just the tapered bolt. The one on my Jeep has lasted over 150K miles with no leakage. It is copper. I know I'm supposed to have one by the drawings, but I don't think my plug is OEM.

In the pan? If stripped threads any thoughts? heli-coil? or oversized bolt? Or am I looking at a new pan? Lots of questions. Oh yeah, '76 750K with no mods.

If I had a pan with stripped threads I'd prefer an oversized bold rather than a helicoil or other insert. OTOH a good insert would be stronger than stock and would allow you to use the stock drain screw and crush washer.
