Tubeless Tires
« on: November 08, 2005, 10:40:03 AM »
The '75 550 I bought a month ago came equipped with brand new Dunlop 404 tires..I just looked the tires over and found they are Tubeless..with tubes inserted..does anyone know if this will be a problem or if there are any safety issues?

   Shouldn't be a problem. It's pretty common.

Totally normal practice now. Try finding a "tube" tire!
The tire bead is a slightly different profile and a bit less fun to seat on the rim, but it will go on. The speed rating of the tire will be reduced because of the tube but few 550s will reach rated speed on a modern bike tire downhill with a stiff tailwind.

While true, the implied sneer about the 550 is a bit hurtfull. ;)

I've got D404's on my 750 -- tubeless with tubes. no safety issues. run GREAT! I like the look of the tread pattern, too.

Seems like the 404s are popular tires.  Reasonably priced, nice modern tread patern, and pretty sticky tires.  I have them on my 75 and I just picked up my rims for the 78 with new 404s.  They told me that with spoked rims you have to run a tube in a tubless tire.  Oh yeah, labor cost me $100! That was for rims completely stripped down of accessories and off the bike.  They were mounted and ballanced and the old tires desposed of.  What cost me was that the insides of the rims were rusted to hell and it took two people to tear the old tires off and 30 min. with a grinder to get the rust off.  So I guess not too bad but damn,  about $300 for new rubber all told...on a bike I bought for $100.

Hey, Ive got an idea!  Lets start a new battle!  Ill go first.

Rippin on 550s huh?  Yeah they might not be as fast as your 750s, especially the K8s, but they look a hell of alot better than their bigger, clumsier brothers, the 750s.  The 550s are sleak and ballanced and perfectly proportioned, much like a fighter jet.  Your 750s on the other hand are like big retards with big ears and too much muscle that end up crushing small animals and trip over their fat uncoordinated feet!  550s handle like razors, like cheetas.  750s handle like druken sloths!  Big stupid 750s!  ;D ;D ;D ;).

I did all the same work myself when I mounted my 404's. You got a pretty good deal in that you avoided a good deal of pain and suffering.  >:( ;)

Actually, as far as the appearance goes, you may be right. I wouldn't mind owning a 550, but I'm afraid of fit, might look like a Shriner Clown riding it.  ;D

whoo  tt,hammer time

Okay, the last time I heard that phrase was during the popularity of the performer MC Hammer.  If he is coming over to do a personal performance, I am indeed horified.  :o
Please don't send him to dance on the street where I live.

Or, does it have to do with the silver hammer supposedly used on a dead Pope or Bishops forehead to be certain of passage? :-\
Be aware, I have helmets and know how to use them. >:(

Or, is it a Beatles reference?  (Still trying to reconcile "Maxwell's silver Hammer", "All You Need is Love", "Happiness Is A Warm Gun", and "Fixing a Hole".)

Explain yourself Duster of Dudes!  And, just why do they need dusting?

 ;D ;D ??? ;D ;D

P.S.  Tubes in tubless tires have worked fine for me over the last Twenty years. At, least on my 550s. :)
I have had rim rust issues causing a flat. A spire of rust poked a hole in the tube.  Abrasives and a follow up coat of Zinc Chromate paint inside the rim cured that problem.

While we are on the subject of be-raiding each others models  ;D, would a considerate 550 owner, you all are, right, be willing to measure the distance from the seat to the pegs? This seems to be a critical area for me. The distance on my 750 is OK, much less than that and I think I would be riding in a constant crouch.  :(

Cb550F
Top of seat to top of footpeg - 20 inches.  From left foot peg to right footpeg over top of seat - 45 inches.  This isn't where you sit though.  The pegs are directly under the very front of the seat.

The Cb550 seat is narrower than the Cb750 seat.

Measured my 750 and the seat height in the same location is almost identical. I'm guessing that due to my height I would consume most of the seat. Would a 550 be out of the question for someone 6'4"? Mind you, I'm not thinking of it as a long distance tourer.

Bob Im 6 foot with my boots on/165lbs(of rippling steel!) and Im quite comfortable on the 550.  I tend to sit very close to the tank so my feet end up almost directly below my ass.  I let a buddy ride it once and he was about 6'5"/230lbs.  He looked way too big on it and he said he felt cramped.  I guess you'd just have to try one out though.  Of course the 550s are designed for the lighter, more athletic frame of a young man in his prime so you should probably stick to that clumsy overweight 750. ;D ;D  Haha, Im sorry thats gotta sting!  All in fun.  Later.
