Gel seat inserts
« on: June 05, 2009, 09:07:28 pm »
Went for a ride with the wife today and came to the conclusion that the Carpy made seat I have loved for 3 years is past its' prime ::)

My ass was so sore after just 150 klm.
On the ferry home I pushed down on it with my fingers and realized I am sitting on the steel pan :o

Just ordered one of these...the small one. http://www.thepropad.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=80

anyone else tried these type of seat additions to a cafe seat?

I've heard of guys on hardtails stuffing dr scholls gel foot pads into thier butt pockets on thier jeans, maybe that would help... :D

Well, the piece I ordered was a bit slim, so I am installing  it right over where my ass has worn it down ::)

I'm taking it to a woman on the island who does boat upholstery  in an hour to get another set of hands to button it up.

Sturgis, S Dakota is a long way from here ;D

Derek,
Here's the one I use on my GoldWing. Yes it's big but I'm sure it can be cut down and resewn into it's envelope. It feels good for long distances.  http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/4/Auto/AutoAccessories/SeatCushions/PRD~0321419P/Gel%2BSeat%2BCushion.jsp

Thanks gents, but it's all sorted now.
We glued a few bits of the cover material so I left it at her house to dry.  It will look like original when I get it back.

I dropped into the sheep farmer down the road from me today and he is going to find me a nice little piece for a top cover ;D

Getting ready Rix

Cliff, having spent 10 days on this bike on a past trip to California I know it's really just the 2 bones that get sore.

I stopped at Canadian Tire to look at that thing you mentioned. It's for a full size truck!!!!!!!!!
How big do you think my ass in the saddle is??

The seat is 11" wide at the back, 6 1/2 inches long and 6 inches wide at the front.
My balls don't stick out that far when I ride so a small pad will be fine ;D

As for the gel outside covers.........I needed to deal with the "no foam" left on the seat pan so I had to do something to rebuild it.
Might as well try to hide it.
I did lay down 1/2 inch foam around it to bring it all to the same level, and then laid another 3/8 inch piece over the works.
Should work out fine.

One thing about the gel is that it absorbs temperature.  Like, if you leave the bike out in the sun while you're at work the gel seat will stay really hot for most of your ride home.  Or if it's winter time the gel seat will stay cold for a good chunk of your ride unless your garage is heated.  With some foam on top you might be better off.  I know people who've given up on the tavelcade and other seats with gel top-panels because of the heat-absorbtion issue.

Well, I did say you could cut it down.  ;D
It fits my 'Wing seat nicely and is very comfortable.
Cheap too - $10 on sale.

Derek, you're going to have Terry very jealous. Stay away from the sheep farm!  ;D  At the least, get it outta yer system before we ride  ;)

Oh yeah, get some good ear plugs unless you want to lead. You've heard the Fat Boy and Newc's "firecracker in a tin can" VTX.

here's a thread from the GL1800 forum on keeping "the boys" comfy and dry while travelling long distances. Anything to help. ;D
