clattering noise whan running idle
« on: June 06, 2009, 01:55:34 PM »
hello again.

I have a heavy clattering noise when my bike is running idle, but the noise is gone when i rev it up.
Anyone any idea what it could be?

Does it go away when you pull in the clutch lever?

Its the clutch basket if it goes away when you pull in the lever.

Its the primary chains otherwise, likely.

Former, can be mitigated with different plates and set up. Latter, not much you can do.

Both are normal.

Oops, could be cam chain and that should go mostly away with proper adjustment.

can i do anything about it when it's the primary chain?

is it possible cam chain makes heavy noise at idle speed and no noise when you rev up?

these bikes can also sound like that when the carbs are out of sync  ;), may just need a tune up, cheers Mick.

Adjust your cam chain tensioner by the book and see if that changes the noise.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Primary chains can only be accessed with complete engine teardown. The primary chain tensioner can be accessed by removing the lower crankcase, something short of a teardown, but engine must come out of frame. How many miles on it?

The tensioner has been shown here to be a weak link. They don't fail, they just become weak. I am replacing mine in my project with a new one, which is obviously stronger than one with 50,000 miles on it and i am placing a preload chip under the spring, an idea of Rob at voxonda.

Not so likely the cam chain will quiet down with revs other than other noise will overtake it. Still it needs a proper tensioning. If you cam chain tensioner is stuck, it may be that the adjustment has been attempted but it didn't take. This is a common problem with high mileage and/or neglected CB750s. The tensioner plunger gets stuck. When you loosen the lock bolt it is supposed to jump forward under spring pressure and take the slack out of the chain. Then you retighten the lock bolt to hold it there. But if the plunger was stuck, loosening and tightening the bolt accomplishes nothing.

All of this should be done with the engine at 15 degrees after top dead center (ATDC) on cyl 1-3 per manual.

My 76F1 clatters a bit at idle when cold, lessens a bit when the clutch lever is pulled in.  I have adjusted the cam tensioner and verified that it is not stuck.  It does go away when the engine is warmed up so at this point I have accepted this as "normal" for this bike.  I have yet to check the carb sync as I am waiting for my brother to cough up the mercury carb tune device he supposedly has in his attic. :D  Bike has 7000 miles and runs great with no issues.

About 55,000 miles? Very good, but that is the point at which one would hear the rattles get a little louder.
