76 CB550K spring tuneup question
« on: June 07, 2009, 06:12:01 AM »
Having stored my bike in a heated barn all winter on its side kickstand I find it running poorly. It is a 1976 CB550K and it was running perfectly last fall when stored. I got it started and went for a short ride and found a big hesitation, power loss, in the low rpm range and barely got it back to my place. The spark plugs are white! real lean?
I'm looking for suggestions on where to start and how to get it back in good running order.
Thanks for any input

Did you drain the float bowls when you put her away last fall?  If not, then you prolly have some gummed up idle jets &/or circuits.  An afternoon of carb cleaning should fix you right up if that's the case!  A full tune-up by the book should be done regardless.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Last year when stowing the Ocho, I treated the fuel with sta-bil and tried to start it every six weeks or so and had no trouble coming through the long winter. I think if you don't treat the fuel, for sure don't let it sit for months in the carbs. Like oldschool says, turn the petcock off and drain the bowls.
