Topic: What's that noise?

OK it's probably nothing but maybe not. And if I can fix it, I will.
When I pull into the garage and put my 76 CB750 K6 with 6000 original miles into neutral, it sounds like a washing machine. Sounds like a rattle or loose cam chain or maybe it's nothing. Any suggestions on what to look for if anything? Is this normal?

Does the noise continue as loud if you pull in the clutch? These are not the quietest of bikes, particularly in a confined space. It could be the cam chain needs adjusting, could be clutch rattle (which is amplified if the carbs are not balanced).

OK I'll adjust the cam chain - or at least go through the motions as the cam chain adjusts itself. I thought maybe with low miles it wouldn't be due yet but can't hurt. Carpy installed a new clutch and carbs but don't get me started on that waste of money.

Do a search on the cam chain adjusting. They are "supposed" to self adjust, but sometimes they don't. You might have to pull it and inspect/free things up. There's a Hondaman (I think) post that suggests sometimes the constant pressure of the lock lock nut creates a dimple in the rod and it always wants to reside in the same spot when you tighten it. Inspection will tell you if this is the case. Another sure fire way to cut down on engine noise is wear a full-face helmet and only take it off after turning off the ignition.

Thanks Bob, I printed out that procedure and put it in my shop manual folder with the other super tips I've gotten here. That's what I love about these bikes - everything is fixable by the average Joe!
