Front Axle Alignment
« on: June 07, 2009, 03:08:14 PM »
I am trying to mount the front wheel on a 76 750 F and can not get the calipers to line up with the disks.  With the wheel off the bike, the distance center to center for the calipers is 5".  The distance for the disks is also 5".  I noticed the inside distance from fork to fork where the axle sits is 6".  When I measure the axle it is 6 1/8".  So in order to mount the wheel I have to spread the forks apart 1/8" which throws to rotor and caliper alignment off.  Is it possible I have the wrong axle spacers or wrong axle on the bike?  Are all these axles interchangeable from year to year and K vs. F?  Could it be something else?

I posted some photos and you can see the left rotor is 1/8" from fork leg and right rotor is 1/4" from fork leg.  How do I center the wheel?

Could it be that you're using ComStars on a '76?  I know that the two don't mix-and-match very well.

I checked the spacer on the right and it is fully inserted 3/8" into the axle assembly.  Total length of the spacer is 1 1/8".  Maybe it should be a 1" spacer???

Also, even though this is a 76 F it does have the forks from a 77-78 F with dual front brakes and comstars.  Starting to wonder if all the parts are interchangeable?

No, they're not.  The rotors are different in the offset to fit the calipers, which are also different, and rear-mounted.  Getting a set of comstars to fit a '76 would require the entire front end from a '77 or other comstar-using bike.

If assembly is correct and of factory origin..

End of axle will be fairly flush to the end of the long axle nut.

Thanks for everyone's help with the front axle alignment on my cb750F.  I had a local machine shop cut the axle spacer down by 3/16" and the everything lined up close enough to get the front brakes working.  I still think something is not right, shouldn't have to machine your stock parts for them to fit correctly.  Wish I knew the complete history on this bike.
Anyways, thanks for the help, I now have front brakes, just need to figure out why the rear locked up on me.

Did you use the trees from the 77?

I'm wondering if the 76 trees were smaller.

Also....those comstars look like later models....

The 77 are not the dished type.....reversed comstars....
