K7 Throttle return spring
« on: June 08, 2009, 06:13:01 AM »
After being diagnosed with tendonitis in my right arm, I need to somehow soften up the throttle return on my K7. I did some searching and found some people used a lighter duty spring and I have tried that but found that the carbs wont really close well without the heavy spring. I tried a few different springs too.

I've recently cleaned/lubed the throttle cable and rerouted to have the least turns, and it really only has one long sweeping bend, and this helped but it's still stiff.

I also have a throttle rocker to help out.

When talking about the throttle return spring, it's the spring on top of the carb rack next to the idle adjustment, correct? What's the spring for that is coiled up towards the middle of the rack?

I threw my spring away years ago.
The throttles will still close on their own just from the weight of the slides when you're under way.
All you have to do is put your hand on the throttle to keep it where it's at.
Just got back from Yosemite (800 mi each way) and my wrist is fine!
X= an unknown quantity
Spurt= a drip under pressure!

Coiled spring in the middle is for the choke armature.

The throttle return spring is on the 3-4 carb space between the carb bodies and their inlet plate.  I would pull it off and head to the local hardware store to find something softer but the same relative length.

What type of cables do you have? Honda ones are some $$ but they help out ALOT. Much much better then aftermarket even if there brand new.

Add one of these:

Properly adjusted, it will take 100% of the strain off your wrist when just holding a particular throttle setting.  You can still twist the grip when it's engaged.  Just a quick flick of the thumb to engage and disengage.

Early 750's had an adjustable friction shoe built into the throttle housing that served a similar purpose, but could not be disengaged.  You set it so that it helped hold the throttle in place but loose enough to flick the throttle open and closed easily.
