Politicly Correct
« on: June 08, 2009, 10:01:10 AM »
I'm kind of just wondering.... is the "political correctness" thing just an American issue or is this an international thing. I can kind of understand how some terms or phrases are not the nicest or can be damaging to someone but as far as I'm concerned it has been taken to the level of stupidity here in the U.S of A.
As an example several colleges have changed thier school mascots because they thought that they may be offensive to someone or some group (or someone said that it was offensive)  I for one am of Irish heritage and think that its cool that Notre Dame is called the "Fighting Irish" with a little leprechaun. Perhaps I'm just a thick skinned Irishman.

I have a feeling it's mainly an overly-sensitive American thing.  I know when I watch shows on the BBC they say and do things that you could never get away with on American TV.

The stupidest part of all this politically correct speak is that after a while the new term that replaced the old "offensive" term gets the exact same stigma attached to it and then becomes "offensive" itself, and then needs to be changed again. ::) ::)

I for one think there should be more italian based mascots...

like a fat guy wearing a wife beater over his body hair sweater and some gold chains on.

They'd be the (insert school name here) Dagoes.

Or the Fighting Guineas.

lol my mom would kill me if she read this.

dingdingdingdingggggg!!! give that man a cigar.

on the state flag of massachusetts is depicted an indian, native american, indigenous north american ... and people wanted it removed. in my high school (after i graduated thank god mythological monotheist diety), some insisted the play of west side story be kept from being shown, because it offended hispanics latinos. mind you this all came from whites in the community. later, and only then, were there comments from members of the latino community who insisted they had no beef with the play at all.

then there's the aclu who have sued various counties in california for having symbols of christianity on their official flags, etc... state flags as well. because, ya know... places like sacramento (most holy sacrament), and los angeles (of the Angels) have no business having references to christianity.  ::)

quote from wiki:

"The county was targeted with the threat of legal action by the ACLU in 2004 regarding a small cross on its seal. The ACLU claimed that separation of church and state prohibited this display."

below is the before and after.  mind you, the female figure is a depiction a greek goddess (don't recall which), so i'm assuming it's only christian symbols that the separation of church and state apply.

More idiots would be dead if it wasn't so illegal to shoot 'em.

People who take offense are too ashamed of their past to accept their differences.

People make references to the mob all the time when they first meet me. Do I go around and #$%* to the ACLU that all mob related things should be removed because I'm offended?

No.

But my neighbor apologizes to me for his girlfriend because she thinks it's cute to say she had a "wop"ping good time. If I was offended I wouldn't complain. I'd just slap the honkey #$%*.  ;D ;D

frankly, it's an indication of how good we have it where the worst thing we worry about is being offended.

btw: i'm convinced the p.c. stuff is political agenda in disguise.

I'm kind of just wondering.... is the "political correctness" thing just an American issue or is this an international thing.

I met a nice Dutch couple in a campground in Utah a few days ago.  They used the phrase several times when describing issues concerning immigration in their country.  Apparently there some things considered impolite to discuss publicly, making it difficult to address problems.

One of this households favorite topics is how this country and other are getting too f**ing PC.  There is a little thing called the right to free speech and if I want to drop an f-bomb, I open the bomb bay doors.  Thin skin is a disease that some people suffer from and I aim to root them all out and leave my mark on them.  I prefer the code of "if you don't like it, shut the f**k up."
I am offended by peoples offended-ness.  How do I work that out?  Can I call the ACLU and have them sue PC people because they offend me?
People should really spend their time in a more productive way rather than whining about words or images.

Some of my best times are spent with my close friends, pushing the limits on what we will and will not say.  I've always taken things just a little bit further until most of them are grossed out.  Needless to say, it was all UN-PC, and gee willickers, it is some of the biggest fun I ever have.
"Sure, if you don't want that bike in your backyard, I guess I'll take it."  "I'll probably just scrap it......"

I think this is more than an american issue. It just seems different I think because of different cultures. For example, the bird in the us is different in other countries and would not get a second glance.
I think a lot of this also depends on where you are at. In the midwest, it is not as prevalent except for the college thing.

OK this will probably ruin my reputation but hey at least I'm not Australian! ;D
A bloke from the bush walked into a Sydney antique shop. After looking around for a while, he noticed a very life-like bronze statue of a rat. It had no price tag, but it was so striking that he decided to buy it anyway.

He took it to the owner and said: 'How much is this bronze rat?' The owner replied: 'It's $12 for the rat, and $100 for the story.' The fellow gave the owner his $12 and said, 'I'll just take the rat, you can keep the story' !

As he walked off down the street, he noticed that a few real rats had crawled out of the drains and begun following him. This was a little disconcerting, so he started to walk a little faster, but within a couple of blocks, the swarm of rats had grown to hundreds, and they were all squealing and screeching in a very menacing way.

He increased his speed and ran on towards Sydney Harbour and as he ran, he looked behind him and saw the rats now numbered in their MILLIONS, and they were running faster and faster. By now, very concerned, he ran down to the pier and threw the bronze rat as far out into the water as he could.

Amazingly, the millions of real rats jumped into the water after it, and were all drowned.

The man walked back to relate all this to the shop owner, who said, 'Ah, you've come back for the story then?'

'#$%* no!' said the bloke, 'I came back to see if you've got a bronze Muslim, a couple of Asians, a Poof, anything Aboriginal and an Indian spin bowler.

I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Dude I am irish too and I don't want some short red headed bastard representing my people, I want the Tom Cruise Irish man from Far and Away. Haha...

No they actually talked to a lot of the tribes and asked them if it was cool. Like the Seminoles, the school happened to have a good standing with the tribe so they let them keep the name, however Morehead state did not have such a good standing and are now the flap backers or some stupid thing like that.

which is odd, you'd think the tougher things get the more likely people would stop getting their panties in a twist over trival stuff and prioritize on the real issues. maybe things aren't bad enough.

we'll see when the next depression comes in about 8-10 years from now.
